I-797 is simply a Notice of Action.
It could have any of the following classifications.
Receipt of a petition, Approval of a petion or denial.
H1-B is one type of petition. When you apply for
I-140, I-485 or I-765, you can still get an I-797
notifying you that the application/petions is received or approved or denied. |

i think that I-797 section papers are for getting the greencard,which is the last step for the processing.but i am not sure.let me know whether i am right or wrong.

I-551 is the actual card that you receive from INS after your 485 is approved.
I-485 is the stage where you file for change of status. Upon the receipt of the I-485, you will receive work permit and after the approval of I-485, you will be asked to go to the nearest INS office for finger printing and stamping your passport. With this stamping you should be able to travel outside of the US. The stamp is valid for a year and before it expires, you will receive your card (I-551).
I-797:- Form I-797, Notice of Action, which serves as a receipt of the petition or as a notice of approval, or a receipt for the filed petition or notice of approval issued by a local district office. (this I did ctrl-c+ctrl-v from immigration.com site). |
