Kerry clearly scored better in the debate.
and the main reflection of that estimate showed in the peoples' responses after the debate.
Most of the independents were talking in favour of kerry. some of them went to the extent of ridiculing bush. some of the independents' responses after the debate....
-it was claer that kerry is a better intellectual compared to bush.
-I didnot understand how kerry managed without laughing at some of the president's comments
-I have voted to bush in 90's but i am not going to vote for this man. no way.
-I am embarassed about bush being the president of US
none of the "others" wholeheartedly accepted bush. either they strongly favoured kerry or they were against both. only these two categories were there among the others.
My observations:
1.
Kerry's stand was based mainly on real facts and a little of abstract facts.
But, bush 'as usual' was totally depending on abstract facts.
(by real facts i mean actual events that are taking place eg: north korea growing into a nuclear capable country , no WMDs in iraq etc.
by abstract facts, i mean the ONLYNBK kind of statements. eg: when we go to war we need to win the war. and... we will win the war because iraqi people want to be free.)
2.
The whole of bush's debate can be compressed to 3-4 statements.
you approved the war on iraq in 2002, the $87bn bill, and now you are opposing. you are changing sides according to politics. a commander in chief cannot lead if he is not consistent.
But kerry brought out a lot of interesting facts like
-the coalition before going to the war wasn't a real coalition if 120,000 of the troops are american and 8,000, 4,000 of the remaining 3-4 countries.
-focus on war on terror being shifted from osama to iraq. and substantiating it with the findings of 9/11 panel that saddam was not an imminent threat to US and he didnot have the capability to build WMDs.
-the condition of the US troops being horrible in iraq. (a mother of a US army guy told the same on phone after the debate that they are not even provided proper armour.)
-The nuclear proliferation that is occuring in the background which resulted in north korea and iran to build WMDs. where as the focus was on saddam who didnot have WMDs.
-loosing the allies.
-it seems bush senior wrote in his book that during the gulf war they realised their plan was not correct to go beyond basra. because the other parts were dangerous (or something like that)
kerry proposed:
-building a better coalition involving all the prominent countries. inviting them to the table.
-a fundamental change in the situation in iraq. that they not there for oil but make the iraqis believe that they working for them and that they would pull out in 6 months if things went according to his plan.
-he said that osama was using this iraq war as a pretext and taking advantage of it by recruiting more into al-qaeda. which kerry says should be stopped by giving them hope.
3.
Bush seemed a little agitated in the begining.
4.
Kerry was taking notes 75% of the time when bush was talking. in contrast to bush doing that 25% or less than that.
5.
both of them lacked lateral thinking. the debate would have been more interesting with clever statements with twists in the projection of facts.
6.
Kerry came up with a reasonable answer for bush's one and only attack, "sending mixed signals to the troops, you cannot be a commander in chief" . That is.. kerry accepted that that he voted for the war and the $87bn bill. but after that there was a right way and a wrong way to proceed and the president took the wrong way. and thats because he didnot wait until the completion of diplomatic talks with saddam ended. didnot wait until he could convince UN. and he went to war without a plan for peace after the war.
finally kerry seems to have won over the independents the undecided ones to his side.
Bushy statements: LMAO
-the general had a clear plan for the war thats why we could move-in so fast. the baaths and the saddam loyalists escaped leaving their arms and are fighting now. the funny part is , if their plan was so perfect why did it fail leading to an iraq which is in chaos today.
-the most hilarious statement from bush... for this evening
"we will win the war because iraqis know they want to be free"
today's debate was more or less one-sided like a chiru-nbk competition.
the real intellectual war will be witnessed when Edwards and Cheney take the podium.
