Gere, Stone likely to star in Indian production Hollywood actors Richard Gere and Sharon Stone are tipped to don a role in an Indian film inspired by the message of Lord Buddha to be directed by Shekhar Kapur. The yet-to-be-named film is backed by industrialist B.K. Modi and would have Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama and motivational guru Deepak Chopra as advisers on the project. Modi, who is president of the over century-old Buddhist society -- Mahabodhi Society of India - told reporters here that teaching the world to be happy would be the central theme of the movie. Indian actors would don the lead roles, but Gere, Stone, Melissa Mathison and Goldie Hawn would also be associated with the Rs.2.5 billion project, it is believed. Modi, however, did not clarify whether Gere, a converted Buddhist, and other Hollywood stars would act in the film or just assist in the production. "Parts of the movie would be shot in India as this is the land of Lord Buddha, but post-production work would be done in Hollywood," said Modi, who himself is a Hindu but firmly believes that the two religions share many traits. While the project is at a preliminary stage, no decision has been taken on the language of the film. "It should appeal to a worldwide audience. Basically, it would be in English, but parts of it could be in Hindi, in Japanese and so on," Modi said. He promised that though a number of films had been made based on Lord Buddha's life and ideas, the proposed project would be different. Modi said that the film project was part of Mahabodhi Society's mission to spread Lord Buddha's message of world peace.
