Each time the Nandi awards were announced some controversy or the other has surrounded it. Thankfully this time there was no noticeable controversy except popular opinion that it has lost its original charm. The Nandi awards committee motto is to boost the spirit of the Telugu film industry, but lately it has been guilty of not being analytical enough while choosing the films. The film Aithe, that won a national award, as the Best Regional Film didn’t impress the committee. Instead, it won awards in the category of Best Story Writer (Chandra Sekhar Yeleti) and Best Audiographer (Madhusudan Reddy). Does that mean there are differences in the national and regional committee’s policies? Most of the film industry predicted the Best Film award for Aithe and Missamma. While Missamma is in the list as First Best Film, Okkadu took second place (it got eight awards) and Amma Naanna O Tamilammayi (though it was a big hit, nobody thought it would be in the Best Film category) walked away with Third Best Film. An important element, violence, plays the key role in the selection process of the committee. Despite the committee chairman veteran Gummadi Venkeswara Rao’s statement on the amount of violence in today’s films, Okkadu won eight Nandi awards in different categories. There is a lot of violence in Okkadu since the story is based on Rayalaseema factionalism. No doubt Okkadu was a blockbuster. But how about Simhadri, which was also a big hit? The committee merely commented that it was a very violent film. Period. Strange, that while some violent films get away with it, others don’t. Nobody knows the guidelines. Thankfully there was no controversy on the Best Leading Actor, Best Leading Actress and Best Director. Mahesh Babu, Bhoomika and Gunasekhar respectively walked away with the awards. Of late, there has been no curiosity about the announcement of awards. In the past, not just the industry but the audiences too were keyed up in anticipation about the awards. Last year’s big controversy happened when the Best Leading Actor’s award was given to two heroes, something that had never happened earlier. Have people resigned themselves to the fact that the awards selection is biased and in favour of some influential people? Can the prestigious Nandi awards ever hope to regain its sheen in the Telugu film industry?
