A brittle opening combination and a top order that has failed to show any application have been the most glaring of them all. But the shoddy wicket-keeping of Parthiv Patel and the ordinary bowling by Zaheer Khan could not have gone unnoticed either.
Sehwag and Chopra, who had seemed impregnable in Australia, looked inadequate on home turf. It has again brought to light India's perennial problem of finding a stable opening pair.
The diminutive Patel might have done himself a favour with a plucky knock in Bangalore but his glove-work brought back memories of his disastrous tour Down Under last year.
Zaheer Khan had lacked the pace that made him the bowling spearhead. The left-arm seamer was struggling to get any where near the 130 kph mark and the team management may also decide to keep him out in place of Ajit Agarkar.
Harbhajan Singh and Irfan Pathan have been the glimmer of hope. That the brightest phase of Indian batting should involve these two reflects the sorry tale of other top order batsmen.
Spinning the ball on home track, the 'Turbanator' has taunted the Aussies once again. Not only with the ball, but with his verbal volleys too.
Pathan has regained the swerve and verve that was missing in England. On the bouncy Chennai pitch with sea breeze to back him, the 20-year-old speedster could be more than a handful.
Australia on the other hand might have started off another winning the streak. Stand-in captain Adam Gilchrist has efficiently executed the plans of Ponting who seems to have emerged quickly from the shadows of Steve Waugh.
Glenn McGrath and Jason Gillespie have bowled to the stumps and covered the gaps on the leg
side as in one-day cricket. The reverse swing has been a bonus by all means.
Shane Warne has held his head high in India for once. It has been a final frontier at a personal level too for Warne.

CHENNAI, Oct 13: Stung by the heavy defeat in Bangalore, a ragged India may reshuffle their batting line-up in the second Test against Australia beginning here on Thursday to spur their struggling top order batsmen into top gear.
"We discussed it and there is a possibility (of changing the batting order). The captain has to take a decision," Wright said.

"We are in the same situation like in 2001. What happened in Kolkata was also a tough situation on the first two days but the two players (VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid) turned around the series," Wright said.
