Director S.J Surya is no more the same, from now he is 'Firebrand Surya'. The unit of Indira Productions organized a press meet on the 22nd May 2004, to promote thier movie Naani. The press was in no mood to spare him as he had given the most bizzare of statements before. While the media started hurling questions at him, poor Surya seems to have got agitated, and started using even foul words. Though he wasnt using them against anyone, he used them to express himself. Surprisingly, Suryah spoke freely in telugu. Here a few replies he gave for a few smart questions thrown by the journalists there :
1) Mahesh had a clean image so far in his career, you spoilt it with Naani.. Look at the photo where Amisha and Mahesh smooch, isnt it vulgar?
A) What isnt vulgar in Kushi, and what is vulgar in Naani. Mahesh's image is intact. Pawan Kalyan picks up the phone when Bhoomika calls him, and he is panting in a room with Mumtaz, that time doesnt Bhumika think he #&%@!% her? (Pauses for many seconds, all cameras switched off.) Why do catch the only that photo? There are 140 other vinyls we have put up in the city, what about those? [Journos interupt : But all the vinyls have the same photo] Whats wrong in that photo? We show Mahesh holding his girlfriend Amisha in the film, he is not hanging around with some one else's girlfriend. So, whats wrong in that.
2) After waiting for three years after Kushi, is this the kind of outcome you give? Also Mahesh is a youth star with an action. Why dint you utilize, keep some good fights and elevate the hero's charecter?
A) After a film like Kushi, I could have done 10 films in the meanwhile. Do you guys know how many people approached S.J Surya for his dates. I am the kind who works for quality. I am the only director who works for 3 years on a script. (Thumping on his wrists) "Surya ante gutts unna director [Suryah is a director of gutts.]" Beating up 10 people is not heroism, showing a beautiful relationship between a mother and son is a heroism. Which other director in these days can do that.
3) You gave a statement, that except Mahesh nobody else could do Nani's role, and except Surya nobody can direct such a film, then why did you act in the tamil version of Nani. Mahesh should have done it?
A) Sorry, I take back my statement... I said it in a flow. I meant in telugu, nobody else could have done the role of Naani.
4) Families are not able to watch Nani, because of the indecent material in the film.
A) Who said so? I saw the film yesterday, again. A husband and wife were enjoying the film totally. [Journo interupts again : I saw a brother and sister who were in total disgust watching the film, they walked out] (Surya pauses, there is no reply.) People are enjoying the film in the theatre, its you media people who have bought that divide talk.
5) Dont you feel the tunes delivered by A.R Rehman in the film doesnt match the quality he gave in his recent films Boys, and Nee Manasu Naku Telusu
A) No. I think Rehman gave very good tunes for the film. All the songs are very good in this film.
After the press meet was over, a few other journalists tried approaching Surya and asked him to comment about Aishwarya's charecter in the film. They alledged that her dialogue delivery style and action was a spoof of a popular hero. But Surya, who was visibly upset by then, refused to comment and moved away. Also producer Manjula gave a statement in an interview to a popular daily newspaper that she dared to make a film liek Nani, as she dint want to just mint money, but to bring the best of the actor in Mahesh. She said if she only wanted commercial success and money, she too would have made a film like Okkadu. The over all, pre-release business of the film touched 14 crores, including sattlite rights, Karnataka and Overseas.
