The Telugu Desam is now feeling the pangs of being in the Opposition. Trouble started when it wanted to hold its annual Mahanadu in the city. First, the TD leadership could not get a spacious venue to accommodate its 6,000 odd delegates for the two-day session. It did not get permission for the exhibition grounds as it was “already booked”. Senior TD leaders then went on an unsuccessful search for a suitable place.

The venues were either too big or too small. Some owners were reluctant to offer their premises. After a 10-day search, the party leadership finally zeroed in on a function palace at Gudimalkapur. But the big question mark now staring at the State leadership is — who will bear the cost?

Secondly, the party is facing a severe financial crisis, having spent all its money on the just-concluded elections, which it took as a “do or die” battle. Out of power, the TD leadership is not in a position to convince “well-wisher” industrialists or businessmen to bear the costs. It cannot pressurise partymen either as most of the candidates, despite pumping in huge amounts, lost the election.

Thirdly, the Telugu Desam has no agenda on hand — either political or social. Former chief minister and TD president N Chandrababu Naidu does not have any statistics on hand to deliver his usual 120-minute inaugural speech. The TD is getting a taste of how it is to sit in the opposition.
