CHENNAI: Two advocates in a drunken state allegedly sexually assaulted a woman and beat up another in the high court premises on Tuesday evening. While the police arrested one of them, the search for the other is on.

The incident comes barely two days after an ugly fracas between the supporters of Kanchi Mutt and the lawyers at the high court, which resulted in violence leaving many people injured.

According to sources, the two advocates, Guhan and Namo Narayanan were in a drunken state when they grabbed a 45-year-old Surabhi (name changed) and assaulted her sexually. “At around 4 p.m. the Surabhi was waiting for her lawyer, when the two, who were in a drunk state accosted her and asked her to come with them.

When Surabhi asked them who they were, Guhan came up from behind her and grabbed her. Narayanan who was standing in the front, assaulted her,” said a high court police officer.

Surabhi tried to protect herself and hit Guhan. Following this, both Guhan and Narayanan started beating and biting her severely, the officer said.

“At this point, another woman, Vasavi (name changed) who was walking by tried to stop the two in an attempt to protect Surabhi who was on the ground by then. Guhan and Narayanan then proceeded to shove Vasavi down on the floor. They then started beating Vasavi. “The two women preferred a complaint with us. Since Surabhi was the first to be assaulted, she gave the complaint and Vasavi was the witness.

While Guhan has been arrested, the search for Narayanan is still on. It is confirmed that Guhan was drunk when he assaulted the women. Narayanan will be secured soon,” said an officer investigating the case.

Cases under Sections 341- wrongful restrainment, 323-voluntarily causing hurt, 354-assault of woman with intent to outrage the modesty of woman of the Indian Penal Code and two Sections of the Tamil Nadu Prevention of Harassment against Women Act
