The slack phase continues its uninterrupted sprint at the box-office. Except 7/G BRINDAVANA COLONY, no film in this season has delivered goods at BO. All the films that were released in this Dussera-Deepavali season bombed miserably. No wonder that they deserve the fate, as the films have not any interesting quality to sustain in this cutthroat environment. A close look at how the films have been faring at box-office would explain the current sorry state of film business in Telugu film Industry. An analysis.. Floor pasting is not festival One hoped that Megastar Chiranjeevij’s SHANKERDADA MBBS would set new records and also would end gloom in the film industry. It was meant to take a flying start and the film behaved exactly the way one expected it to in the first week. Initial reports indicated that it would break all the records. The film has really garnered unprecedented collections in the first week. But now,the film is not a ‘profit’ venture in many areas. From the second week it went south way. Why did this happen? Well, damn the reviewers and hype-makers. In truth, the film is nowhere the original nor it is entertaining. Usually, Chiru’s films will have good music. But in SD MBBS, music was the low point. And there is no glamour quotient. Dialogues were routine. Even the so-called ‘Chiru’s English dialogues’ are not that good and very few. At the most, he speaks only five times in ‘talk like Shanker Dada English’ (as Gemini TV bombarding). So the usual first week hype didn’t sustain when non-fans started coming to theaters. As Chiranjeevi said in the film, ‘floor pasting is not festival’ (his English word for Telugu proverb, “Illu Alakagane Panduga Kadu”) means initial hype doesn’t fetch record breaking collections. Kshwarabhishekam for SWARABHISHEKAM producer After long gap, acclaimed director and legend K Vishwanath wielded the megaphone with SWARABHISHEKAM. Though his last film with Venkatesh, CHINNABBAYI, was a disaster, there were lots of expectations on SWARABHISHEKAM. No one expected blockbuster from him with this film but there was apparent feeling that this film would be good musical like his classical films SAGARASANGAMAM and SHANKERABHARANAM. But SWARABHISHEKAM was disaster in the first week itself. The film is very boring (Yes, I know, Telugucinema.com gave good marks for the film. The reviewer made big err) and very TV-serial like. Talk is that it is KSHWARABHISHEKAM (means shaving off) for the producer Kousalendra Rao. We all know Vishwanath is great director but he should realize that making films in the old format and continuing to be in ‘Brahmanical’ format will not yield results now. The film is also lesson for all the ‘old good directors’ who are now trying to make films. CHANTIGADU is better than CHANTI? Raviteja’s CHANTI was such a disaster that people now are commenting that a small film called CHANTIGADU had collected more than mass hero Raviteja’s CHANTI. This comment alone explains about the film. 7/G withstood the winds In this season only ‘7/G Brindavan Colony’ withstood the negative winds. The film got slow openings but sustained till now. It is estimated that it would collect Rs 10 Crores. It is a big achievement for a film that was made in the budget of 3 Crores. The film is raved because of director Selva Raghavan’s conviction. His style of narration is very good and commendable. ANAND is a lesson for everyone Another director whose conviction paid off well is director Shekar Kammula. His film, ANAND’s success surprised everyone. It is now the only genuine hit without any false claims. It has also affected some of the ‘big’ films. It is true. In Hyderabad, it is king in the collections. Why did the film become so success? So simple, it has good narration, no false pretensions, no hype, simple entertainment, good music, and honesty in filmmaking. And others.. Sravanthi Ravikishore’s YUVASENA too is okay grocer at the Box office. Whatever Ravikishore might claim, the film is not even drawing crowds in his own theatre SHANTI 70mm (Hyderabad). Dussera release Mr and Mrs SHAILAJA KRISHNAMURTHY finally turned out to be profit-making venture (in small way). Madala Ravi and Prema starrer MA ILAVELPU released and sank without trace. Hardly anyone knows that the film is released. Such was the publicity. Ramyakrishna’s sizzling film, VAYASU PILICHINDI has no takers. TOP – 5 as collections wise SHANKERDADA MBBS :Though it is considered as hit, it is not ‘rocking’. Chiranjeevi needs to tread cautiously now. In Hyderabad and Vizag it is doing okay but in most areas hard to break even. ANAND Big hit for its budget. In Hyderabad and other A centers, theaters still showing houseful in the second shows too. 7/G BRINDAVAN COLONY Very profit making venture. But it is no-no film in rural centers. Youth are its target audiences. SYE In Hyderabad, it is still running in 9 theatres. It was supposed to be big hit as the initial reports showed but ANAND and 7/G dented hole. YUVASENA Average flick. But will hardly get break even.
