Hi all.......
i find this statement very interesting......
may be a better way of putting it (aacc ti what i percieve of this) is
that thwere is no absolute truth.... i mean, there are a lot of small
truths, changing with our beliefs....at any given point in time, whatb
i belive is true..
so in a way everything is true and everything is not true at the same
time..getting me??
iam attaching a piece written by a dear friend..it appeals to my
sensibilities..do tell me if it makes sense to u!!!
Him: I have come with a question.
Her: You have come with a longing.
Him: I have.
Her: You seek the one great truth
Him: Yes.
Her: Why?
Him: I am tired of the tiny truths.
Her: What is wrong with them? They serve you well, help you on your way.
Him: They are useless without a uniting truth.
Her: There is no great truth.
Him: Is that the truth?
Her: Yes, but it is not the truth.
Him: Isn't that a contradiction?
Her: Contradiction is the nature of truth.
Him: What is the opposite of truth?
Her: There is no opposite of truth, only the opposite of belief.
Him: What is the opposite of belief?
Her: Doubt.
Him: So anything I doubt is not true?
Her: Do you doubt it?
Him: I do.
Her: Then it is not true.
Him: What is true?
Her: Anything you choose to believe.
Him: Belief is truth?
Her: Truth is belief.
Him: What do you believe?
Her: That there is no one great unifying truth. That each truth is
singular in and of itself with no significant relation to the previous
moment or the next. That truth is the momentary cessation of motion in
epiphany, a glimpse of enlightenment, ultimate understanding. But the
moment passes as the moment must and everything as we know it is
changed and the truth is no longer applicable the way it was a moment
before.
Him: What does it become?
Her: A decaying element with an undiscovered half life.
Him: All truth is decaying then.
Her: Or building in subconscious construction waiting for the moment
of completion and epiphany.
Him: Truth is not a fluctuating value.
Her: Have you ever changed your mind?
Him: Of course.
Her: Why?
Him: Because I was incorrect.
Her: What you previously believed was wrong.
Him: Yes.
Her: There, the value of your truth decayed.
Him: No. It was never the truth. I was always wrong, I just didn't know it.
Her: It was the truth until the moment before you changed your mind. A
truth you would have argued without certain information. A truth whose
polarity reversed in a moment of disconcerting revelation. The valence
of the information didn't change, only you're belief in it did.
Him: No. The facts changed and I realised that and changed my mind.
Her: No. The facts always existed, you merely encountered ones that
you had not before. The truth did not change, you're belief did. Do
you dream?
Him: Occasionally.
Her: Vividly?
Him: Rarely.
Her: When you wake, how do you know what transpired in your bleak
dreams did not actually take place?
Him: Because that is impossible.
Her: What makes it impossible?
Him: I didn't move. I don't remember moving.
Her: But you do remember dreaming.
Him: Yes, but I woke up in the same place in the same clothes.
Her: In the same position?
Him: No.
Her: Every day you get out of bed and every night you return to bed,
in the same place, in the same clothes. How do you know that what
intervened wasn't a dream?
Him: Because of the motion between states. Because of the connecting memories.
Her: So because of the moments when you walk through your door each
day past the hand sheltering your bed from the rest of the world you
believe that one is real and the other is not? What happens if you
snip those thirty seconds from your day? Then what is the difference
between your day and a dream?
Him: But they DO exist, you cannot remove them. I know that they're there.
Her: How?
Him: I experienced them.
Her: The same way you experienced your dream?
Him: What are you getting at?
Her: That each of my dreams becomes memory, and each of my memories
becomes a dream. That the line separating the two is only belief. That
the line between the two is fear and that to relax it to the point of
uselessness is not folly but necessary in order to see the truth, to
find what you believe.
Him: What do you believe?
Her: All truth is based on evidence. Evidence is gathered through
encounters. Encounters are random, despite the pattern we attempt to
lay over the chaos. After revelation based on previous experience we
see each supporting moment as significant and the trail between those
moments as more than random.
Him: What?
Her: No two truths are the same.
Him: Why not?
Her: Because no two experiences are identical. Truths are arrived at
through personal experience, thus if no two experience are the same,
then no two truths match perfectly.
Him: But they may be similar.
Her: Yes, truths may be very similar. They may appear to be identical,
but they never are. There is nothing more disheartening than nearly
identical truths.
Him: Why?
Her: Because the dissimilarity is often seen as a flaw. A defect in an
otherwise perfect match. A perfect match that may very well have been
the basis of a relationship. The defect is revealed and the truths,
once thought to be identical, are now dissimilar and dissimilarity of
truths often calls into question the reality of the truth itself,
because often if the truth is not our truth then it is not truth at
all. It is why you will never find what you seek.
Him: Why not?
Her: Because no truth is external. All truths are internal, though we
may believe otherwise. Look at the differences even within sects of
those who believe similar. If the truth were externally revelatory, if
the truth invaded what we believed and changed us then we would all
believe identically, despite the difference of our experiences. But no
two people believe identically, because of their experiences. Thus the
uniting truth you seek either does not exist or has not been
discovered. And while influential truths have been discovered, truths
of action and behavior, there is no single truth that you can catch
and hold close.
Him: And what if I don't believe you?
Her: Then none of it is true.
