A farmer had two sons. The elder son was shrewd, but the younger was not so clever. The farmer fell ill and he called his sons to his bedside. He told his elder son, "You take a portion of our land measuring three thousand two hundred feet in periphery, and offer the remaining land to your younger brother." Soon afterwards, he passed away.
The elder brother found that the land was square in size with each of the four sides measuring eight hundred feet. Thus the periphery was working out to exactly three thousand and two hundred feet. He cooly took possession of the entire land leaving nothing for his brother.
The younger brother went on appeal to the judge. At first, the judge was also puzzled and he could not find anything wrong with the elder brother's calculation. Then a brilliant idea flashed in his mind. He asked them to show him the land.
Now he proceeded to divide the land into four equal squares. Each side now measured four hundred feet. He called the elder brother and said, "You should certainly abide by what your father had told you. Take any two of the opposite squares. When you total the periphery, aren't you getting the same three thousand two hundred feet? This is what exactly your father had in mind. Give the remaining two squares of land to your younger brother."
