Nagarjuna strolls into Annapurna Studios wearing long, streaked hair, fashionably torn jeans and an overnight stubble. His lithe grace matches that of the gently swaying trees as he eases himself into a garden chair in an open area at the studios. Every inch of his persona screams 'Star!'. He's wearing this look for his next film with Puri Jagannath, being produced by the actor himself.
His new film Mass - Dum Unte Kaasuko has had an encouraging opening. But what's with the queer name? "That's what my first thoughts were when Lawrence (director of the film) came to me with the title," says the actor laughing. "But then Lawrence was so involved, so clear, that I ended up a convert," he explains.
There have been loud comparisons of Mass with Shiva but Nag dismisses such talk straightaway. "Mass is a different film. Shiva was 15 years ago. It's probably because of the black & white posters that people are comparing the two. And of course, Ram Gopal Varma was new then and so's Lawrence."
The star's very excited about the novelty in the presentation of Mass. "Lawrence is so full of beans. His confidence and energy levels appealed to me. In fact, if this movie were to have an English title, I would call it Energy," he says. Stylised action scenes are said to be the focal point of the film including some motorbike chase sequences that were filmed in Alibagh (Dhoom was also shot there).
"Lawrence has literally choreographed the fights. He's infused music and rhythm into the action," feels Nag. "But no fights in the air please," says the actor laughing out loud, "That might have been great for Matrix but out here, it's so not happening."
The actor who's known for his impeccable dress sense vetoes the idea that he would be wearing any garish outfits in keeping with the title Mass. "Not at all. To me 'Mass' means something that a lot of people would like. I'm not donning any lungis for sure," he says smiling. He's full of praise for designer Asmita Gunti Marwah who gave him the kurta look in Manmadhudu. "I never tell her what to do, so that's where the newness comes in. In fact, she'd even used bandini dupattas and sarees for some of my shirts. But look how well they clicked!"
Point out that songs in Mass remind one of Shankardada MBBS and Khadgam and Nag's unruffled. "I know. A lot of people have been telling me that. But then, some kind of repetition is bound to happen. It does not worry me too much. As for the lyrics of the title song, Anna niluchunte mass, anna koochunte mass, anna nadichiosthe mass, anna lookisthe mass, the actor says there is going to be no glorification of his image. "On the contrary, there's a lot of humour in picturisation," says the actor instantly.
On rumours that the star's making public appearances with his older son Chaitanya because he wants to launch him, Nag ejects, "Oh God! The poor guy just came out with me twice. Once for the MAA awards and then the Mass audio function. Now he's being hounded so much that he doesn't want to be seen with me anymore. Give him a break, he's just 17. I think he still has time."
Nag also dismisses the fact that superstition has anything to with a December release for Mass. Both Manmadhudu and Sathyam were December releases and both were hits. "No no...Pongal's packed with so many releases, so I chose December. Besides, it is the holiday season. And I can tell you one thing," says the actor looking you straight in the eye. "There's no lucky month for a bad film and Mass is definitely a good film." In face of such supreme confidence, one can't help but join the club of Mass mania.
