Thiruvananthapuram, Jan. 18: A pygmy elephant has reportedly been spotted in the Peppara wildlife sanctuary 50 km from here. A local wild-life enthusiast reported the sighting to the forest authorities. According to him, the elephant, which appeared fully grown, was about five feet tall. Its bodily features were also different from that of the typical Indian elephant. The adult Indian elephant usually grows 10 feet tall and the majestic African elephant grows more than 12 feet tall. Deputy Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) Ravindranath told Deccan Chronicle that the department had heard about the sighting but had not confirmed it. Ravindranath, who was manning the Peppara sanctuary till two months ago, said that tribals had told him many times about pygmy elephants roaming obscure areas in the forest. “It could be a sub-species or it could be a freak of nature… one of its kind,” said Ravindranath. “I have not seen it though I was in the sanctuary for some months.” According to tribals in the area, who call it thumbi ana (dragon fly elephant) because of the dexterity with which it moves, it is only half the size of the ordinary elephant. They have told officials that the pygmy elephant is fast and elusive. The Peppara wildlife sanctuary is situated in the 53 square metre catchment area of the Peppara dam. An official said that the body of a small elephant had been found recently. “Though initially we thought it was a baby elephant, doctors felt that it was an adult animal.” |
