"KADHAM KADHAM PAR LADNAAA SEEKOO HAI JEENAA HAITHOO MARNAA SEEKOOO"! For long, the youth of the world has been playing an instrumental role in sketching the global socio-political and economic outlook. Take the history of any Nation, there will be atleast one student movement that has either fought or has been fighting with the establishment to promote a just cause. While some movements like the Student Democratic Party (S.D.A.) in the U.S., the deaths at the Tiananmen Square in Beijing, China ( a "stultified" communist regime in China massacred thousands of students) were peaceful, the others were/are quite vibrant and were/ are driven by extremism ("RAKTHAANIKI RAKTHAM SIDDHANTHAM, PRAANAANIKI PRAANAM SAMAADHAANAM")! THE WEATHERMEN, a notorious student movement that took the U.S by storm during the 1970's, is certainly a movement that belongs to the latter category! This group, along with The Black Panthers, the S.D.A, and the Hippies, brought spearheaded the "counterculture" movement that had a tremendous impact on how the society functioned that time. "The Weathermen Underground" is a documentary film that provides deeper insights about this cult group. Nominated for the 2004 academy awards, this documentary talks to some of the most active members of this group twenty years after they came out of the underground to voluntarily surrender at the end of the Vietnam war! This documentary goes back to the roots of this student activity, which derived its name from the legendary singer Bob Dylan's hit single "YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE A WEATHERMEN TO TELL THE DIRECTION OF THE WIND". It also chronicles the events (the killing of Fred Hampton, the lead man of The Black Panthers group) that led them to branch out of the S.D.A., which was by then a National Phenomenon after originating in The University of Chicago(This was the only school that stood on equall footing with the University of California, Berkerly-the mecca of all Student movements in the U.S.)in a very sequential way. Disturbed by the U.S.'s excessess in Vietnam and pushed by the exuberance of Youth, this radical movement wanted to "Bringing violence back home"(their slogan) in order to highlight the barbaric acts of U.S. citizens on innocent Viatnamese citizens. From 1970 to the early 80's, this group went on a rampage bombing several buildings, the most noteworthy of which is THE CAPITOL HILL, in Washington D.C. Due to these activities, the F.B.I. soon identified it as "America's first terrorist organization" and began a massive manhunt to dismantle it. The movie also shows the group's opposition to "MONOGAMY". The majority of the group were affluent "whitemen" and were of Jewish descent and they often used to feel that Americans (of the day) were behaving like Germans during the holocaust. Today, most of them are in responsible positions and are apologetic about the unintended consequences of their idelogically driven behaviour. An interesting movie that will help you to understand the history of the U.S. better (which will help you to assimilate well)! Check the following link to know more about this movie and the group! http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcfour/documentaries/storyvi lle/weather-underground.shtml Hanuman/Jamadagni www.princefans.us
