It seems like I am in the minority, because my vote goes to SPB.
Without degrading Ghantasala, if I am given the option of either
listening to SPB songs or Ghantasala songs, I would take all the
SPB songs I can get and then some. I am no spring chicken and
I started listening to songs when I was a small kid and there were
plenty of Ghantasala songs that used to be played on the
radio at that time. I am more of a 'Paamara' than a 'Panditha'
when it comes to knowledge of music. Maybe, that explains my choice and also my inability to explain what separates them.
But to me I am in musical heaven when I listen to SPB's songs. I can't say the same thing about Ghantasala although I
enjoy them most of the time.

After seeing so many threads, and also in forum hub too. Its really boring. I really felt to post the following, I posted there too. this might be digression to Tamil Music as I talk mostly about telugu film music.
Sorry for the digression:
Guys SPB has sung in many languages. He is considered great singer. He crossed 40K odd songs. He sings easily in many languages, His voice is a divine gift. But he is not the greatest singer in his home state AP. He can never be compared or can be reached to Ghantasala. In telugu Ghantasala is the greatest ever singer till this age and will remain the same.
The following are the reasons.
Melody Songs: Ghantasala is the best between the two. There are lot of songs where you will be mesmerised with the songs that Ghantasala sang. SPB tried to sing many of them later as an experiments with IR but original songs stand really great.
Devotional songs: Ask every individual in telugu. To whom they listen, Its Ghantasala not SPB. His voice has that magic where people feel the devotion just listening to his voice. He will be involved in the song as if in trance. SPB can never be compared to this. He is good, better but Ghantasala is the best.
Carnatic Songs: Definetely SPB is not a contestant here. Though he sang Sankarabharanam, you hear to ghantasala's easyness, modulation, he is no way comparable. still purist feel SPB as a child before Ghantasala. Even SPB himself agrees.
Complex songs: Just one example Shiva shankari, shivananda lahiri. This is the complex song ever in telugu film industry. How many people tried to sing this song and failed. There will be thousands who tried to sing like Ghantasala. All they failed. I can never imagine SPB can sing a song like that.
Bass and High Pitch: People feel SPB can sing both easily but you cannot imagine the same . Listen to ghantasala. you will feel where he stands.
Composition: SPB composed music for movies. But how many are known to people? How many are hit like ghantasala's compositions? Look at the ghantasala's compostions like Mayabazar, lavakusa. Can SPB match him?
Private Albums: Any body heard Pushpavilapam? man what a great album. There was a debate that karunasri was known to public just because ghantasala sang that. Look the expression, look the clarity, you feel as if flowers are singing. SPB can never bring this much.
Last but not least Listen to Ghantasala's Bhagavadgeeta. He sang before his demise. You will know what his voice is.

What I have noticed is the music component in the songs. In old songs, the music is minimal or the foreground is taken by the song whereas from the mid 70s, the songs are dominated by the music and many times you don't understand the song!!
Over a period of time, people started appreciating a song for it's music rather than the PATA and BHAVAM as they started seeing no big BHAVAM or meaning in the song!! Offcourse there are exceptions!

Honey mist garu type of music is completely different to compare.
Which type of music we like, we tend towards that singer. May be its Ghantasala or SPB.
The old songs are very good because they are full of melody, very good lyrics and simple orchestration, giving more to a singer to prove. Since Ghantasala had musical background he excelled.
Strange but true is that Ghantasala garu also had to struggle to get into movies. They threw him saying that his voice is too coarse which is not fit to music but history is different. Aa pataaloni madhuryam ee veru.. Daaniki ghantasala, susheela, janaki gaarla voice sarigga saripoyindi boledanni aanimuthyalu bayataki vachayi.
But I cannot imaging ghantasala making justice to "Paata aaginda, okari seatu govinda" I think from shavukar janaki.. Such a youthful energy balu's voice has.. Now coming to imititating voice, I purely give that to MD's choice. Manavallu okati hit aithe inka anni alage undalani korataru. Alage SPB singing like NTR, ANR konchem motadu minchindi chala songs lo. kaani I feel SPB is equally great. He also agrees Ghantasala is great in Telugu Music world and nobody can match him, but thats his humbleness.
May be SPB can sing bhagavadgeeta or something when he is involved in that.. |

Ghantasala gari era was different when compared to SPB's generation. SPB was a budding artiste when Ghantasala garu was in full swing. If they both belonged to the same generation, perhaps, the comparison would have been easier. However, my vote goes to Ghantasala garu.
Somebody questioned - " Ghantasala 'roudra' rasam lo emanna patalu padada ? " If you happen to listen his 'Geetha', that whole track is enough to get all of his nava rasaalu. I bet SPB could never have done justice to Geetha more. This is a mere example. By the time SPB came into industry, technology progressed a lot, with improved orchestration. That definitely gave good scope for SPB to sing variety of songs and exhibit voice modulation.
Devotional songs or sad songs or romantic duets or funny songs (just recall 'sundari neevanti' from Mayabazar) - no matter what type of song it was, Ghantasala garu did complete justice to it. I am sure if he had to sing 'eureka katha meetha' song with current orchestration, he would have certainly done justice to it, like how he did to 'manasaina oh chinadaana'(Dattha putrudu'). Only difference is orchestration. He sure did lose his tempo during his last days, because of his ill health. He passed away at an early age of 52, otherwise he would have rendered more pearls to telugu film music.
Coming to SPB, needless to mention that he is a great singer too. But when compared to Ghantasala garu, I can not consider him better than the latter. I am sure he can not do justice to songs like 'siva sankari' or 'jagame maya' or 'muddabanthi poovulu'. But he has an advantage over Ghantasala garu w.r.to his mimicry art and that helped him in modulating his voice to the corresponding hero. But if you listen to his songs of late 70's & early 80's,particularly when he sang for NTR and ANR, I feel so irritating. Particularly, I feel, instead of playing back, he tried to mimic the hero, and that totally spoiled the song. Ofcourse, kudos to the song lyrics and music too for some of those movies. But on the whole, he too gave excellent songs to film industry that we reminisce for many generations to come. I like his songs - starting from 'e divilo virisna' to latest 'Radha Gopalam'.
Last but not least, though I belong to current generation, I still pick Ghantasala garu over SPB, because I still enjoy all of his songs that belong to our previous generations. On a personal note, many times I felt 'how I wish I had seen him in person'. But I was not even born by the time he passed away. My father happened to see him luckily on some stage show.

The difference between Ghantasala and SPB is difference between the songs " Shiva shankari shivananda lahari" and " ureka thakamika, nachindi girlfriend"...
These songs can be sung only by these two. One cannot sing the other song. Adi difference.

Good post. Honestly speaking, I don’t know who is great. I like SPB since he can sing for any hero, infact he can sing even for comedians and he will make you believe that specific actor is singing, but not SPB. He has been doing this successfully for over 3 decades with so many actors and that is a great thing. Also, he is a versatile singer. He can sing any kind of song devotional/Mass/Tragedy/Romantic/Patriotic anything.
But I have observed this many elders (our parents generation) people say that Ghantasala is the greatest and SPB comes next to Ghantasala. 5, 6 years back I used to have a roommate who has good music knowledge (he himself is a singer) and an elderly person, once the discussion came up and I told him that SPB is great since he is versatile, he can sing any song and can sing for anyone and I told him that Ghantasala can’t do it. Then, he shot back and gave me a detailed lecture on this and he said Ghantasala is the best singer and SPB comes only next to him and he gave his reasons which are quite justifying. He said the advantage for SPB is his mimicry and he said the advantage for Ghantasala is that he is very good in music which makes him a better singer. He quoted some raagaas as well, I’m an illiterate in music, so I didn’t understand some pieces of what he said. As said above, I don’t know who is great but I like SPB. Both of them are great in their own way.

There is hardly a need to elaborate on Ghantasala as a singer.
1)His voice was his great asset.
2)His ability to blend the right expression effortlessly and most naturally into the song is great.
3)His voice, expression, range, ability for pure classical music, and the lightness of voice when required are greatest!!
4)Pushpa Vilapam, Geethopadesam etc., can never be compared!!
Consider for instance "Kudi yeda mayithe" or "Jagame maya" from "Devadasu", or "Kala kanidi, viluvainadi" from "Velugu needalu", or "Manasuna Manasai" from "Doctor Chakravarthi". The expression of sadness, despair, and detachment in these songs is most natural and real - he finds no need for extraneous sounds or gimmicks to evoke the right emotion. Consider "Enta Ghatu Premayo" from "Pathala Bhairavi", or "Andame Anandam" from "Bratuku Theruvu". I wonder whether there is ever a better expression of "Bhavukatha" than what one can find in these songs. Consider "Edu kondala samy" (a private record), or "Mahesa Papavinasa" from "Kalahasthi Mahatyam", or "Thaguna, Varameeya" from "Bhu-Kailas". Can we think of songs in which "Bhakti" is better expressed? Consider his private songs "Atta leni kodalu uttamuralu", "Ravoyi bangaru mava", "Police Venkatasamy, ninnu nenu maruva lenura" - these, more or less, define the once typical village atmosphere and "Telugudanam" to the present-day city dweller. His grasp on music, on Telugu Bhasha, and its culture are all simultaneously evident from the way he rendered Karunasri's "Pushpa vilapam" and "Kunti Kumari". I know people who stopped plucking flowers (in fact, even using them) after they heard "Pushpavilapam". In general, he had an excellent understanding of the old drama style. This is clear from his rendition of Telugu Padyalu and Samskrita slokalu in Pouranika movies. Consider "Siva Sankari, Sivananda Lahari" from "Jagadeka Veeruni Katha", or "Rasikaraja thaguvaramukama" from "Jayabheri", or the "Ashtapadulu" from "Bhaktha Jayadeva". These are all instances of classical music in films. Ghantasala sang these as well as any classical musician could have. With his voice and expression, perhaps he even sang them better than most classical musicians. Last, but surely not the least, are his relatively light-hearted songs, especially his duets with Ganakokila Suseela. "Konda gali thirigindi" from "Uyyala Jampala", "Idemi lahiri, Idemi garadi" from "Idu-jodu", "Vadinapule vikasinchele" from "Mangalya Balam", "Madhuram madhuram ee samayam" from "Bharya-bhartalu" - and of course many many more, are ever-greens.
There have been many film singers - S.P. Balasubramaniam, Jesudas, P.B. Srinivas, A.M. Raja, and T.M. Soundararajan in the south, and Mohammed Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Mukesh, Saigal, Mannade, Hemanth Kumar, and Talat in the north - are perhaps the most notable ones among the males. Although each singer in this list has his own charm and distinctive style, they are hardly comparable to Ghantasala. For one thing, none of them is accomplished as a music director (A.M. Raja, S.P, and Hemanth Kumar did compose music to some films, but are surely a notch below Ghantasala in this department).
Even as singers, when you put together the assets of Ghantasala - his voice, expression, range, ability for pure classical music, and the lightness of voice when required, the rest are hardly a match.

but when it came to SPB he's too selfish and never gave chance to any other singer....i remember hearing some one say that...SPB rejected the whole offer when the producer said he wants someone to sing one song in the movie......and in sentiment filled industry producer couldnt dare to let SPB go and have to accept SPB to sing all of them

Naaku peddagaa teleedu TK mama. Yemanna compare chestaaniki naaku sangeetam raadu. Kaani naaku SPB ante ishtam so I just want to know why Ghantasala is better. So telisina vaaru konchem cheppandi. |

Veeriddaru legends ye. Veeriddari lo yevaru great ani adaganu gaani, what are the pros and cons of these tow guys when compared?
I personally like SPB more coz of his voice and the way he can modulate it. Sangeetam lo praaveenyam lekapoyinaa chala veezy gaa handle chestaadu kashtamain paatalu.
Paata generation, classics param gaa aalochincha kunda. Please share your thoughts. |
