Allu Arjun starrer third film, Bunny, is an attempt by director V V Vinayak to bring in mass image to Allu Arjun. Vinayak tries to pour old wine in new bottle. The film has some excellent scenes, mass elements to please the audiences but all that style makes no sense as it treads familiar terrain. Bunny resembles many of the past ‘faction and action’ based films like Aadi, Simhandri, Run and Vinayak’s own Dil. Hero accomplishing what his father set out to be is very old theme. This time Vinayak has brought in the subject of the controversial ‘Polavaram project’. Like in Samba, the director has touched another ‘socio-political’ issue in this film but it also shows his lack of knowledge about the current socio-political issues in the state. Allu Arjun who is riding high on the success with two consecutive hits once more pleases the audiences with his stylish histrionics in the first half of the film. But much of the film has relied on action stunts just to show that he is capable of becoming mass hero. Those who loved him in Arya will have big disappointment. He is character is not etched well. The film has high on substance and low on content. Narration is laced with the same flashbacks, stylishly shot action scenes, camera gimmickry and et al. Although, Vinayak shows his brilliance in shot making, he is heavily relied on technical gimmickry. Story: Rangarao Bhoopathi (Sharat Kumar) is rich landlord and fights for ‘Polavaram’ project. His dream is to build the project. When CM tells him that the dam will submerge vast agriculture land and thereby leaving farmers in landless situation. Then he decides to donate his 4,000 acres of farming land to the displaced. Hearing this, his sister’s husband Somaraju (Prakash Raju) hires a professional killer Mysamma (Mukesh Rishi) to kill him so that he gets the land. Mysamma kills Rangarao. All this is revealed in a flashback. The film starts with Bunny (Allu Arjun) entering into a college where Somarju’s daughter Mahalaxmi (Gowri Munjal) studying. How Bunny woos her and in the end makes his father’s dream come into realization is the crux of the film. The idea of giving land to government to build a dam is similar to that of Chiranjeevi’s Indra. The basic theme is okay but when the present government is actually committed to build the Polavaram project – which is controversial because of Andhra and Telangana tangle, the idea seems implausible. And also in a song is shown that farmers demanding the dame showing pink flags (of Telangana Rastra Samithi). In reality, TRS objects the dam. The scenes between Prakash Raj and Allu Arjun are hilarious. Allu Arjun has done good job in those scenes. He also built up his body so well. But his performance leaves much desirable especially in the emotional scenes, where he looks awful. Prakash Raj is at usual best. But he becoming Good Samaritan in the end without much effort defies the logic. Tamil actor Sharat Kumar in the role of Rangarao Bhoopathy looks macho but his dialogue delivery is not fitted his image. His role is short and not etched well. Raghu Babu shows his versatility as an actor. Debutant heroine Gowri Munjal looks like Ramya of Kannada films (who did Abhimanyu in Telugu). All the other artistes have done okay. In all Vinayak films, one hardly gets good music. In this film too the music by Devi Sri Prasad is a big letdown. Except the song of Jabilammavo. (which is melodious)., all the songs are so ordinary. Cinematography by Chota K Naidu is slick. Action scenes composed by Kanal Kannan is artificial. End Analysis: The film has some good commercial mass moments but on the whole it leaves in disappointment. The first and foremost drawback is the familiar theme and narration. All those technical gimmickry and hilarious scenes between Prakash Raj and Allu Arjun are momentary; they should not be considered ‘cinema’. The comedy track between M S Narayana and Ali is objectionable. How can an attender command the principal and makes silly comments on him? Music is another big letdown. JP’s Verdict: The film has opened with a bang and it will have good run in the first week as much hype has been generated. It remains to be seen will it continue the same after the initial hungama cools down. It is unlikely to have a long run but will have a decent run upto 50 days and will attract the mass audiences. The film is not recommended for everyone.
