It's been a great experience. Each function is a big surprise. The Mittals have spared nothing in making this wedding as exotic as it can get, and the guests are being looked after so well," said the groom's father, Arun Bhatia. The guest list included Anil and Tina Ambani, Vijay Mallya, Adi and Parmeshwar Godrej, Lord Young, Ramola Bachchan, Lalit and Jyoti Suri, Madu and Raman Sood, Benu and Rajeev Gupta, Indira and KP Singh, Ritu and Gopal Ansal, Meenu and Kammi Bakshi, the Passis, Sweety and Vivek Burman, Ashi Burman, Bina and U K Modi, Hafeez Contractor, Shabana Azmi and Javed Akhtar. But no Indian wedding is complete without some gossip or controversy, and the Mittal extravaganza was no exception. Though many guests received prime pieces of jewellery, including jade necklaces, along with their 20-page, gold-edged invitation books, some guests complained that they didn't get any such pieces. Apparently, a caste system was at work even when it came to the A-list. Sections of London's Indian tribe were also reportedly very cross at being left off the guest list. Many of those excluded are noteworthy members of the British Asian diaspora, but possibly still small fry for the man who owns the world's second-largest steel company. At least one Indian peeress has publicly sniffed that she doesn't care that she wasn't invited and may not been have able to attend anyway. Presumably, she then downed some champagne, made of sour grape CHIRU RULES |

LONDON/NEW DELHI: Monday night saw play-acting at the Mittal marriage. Shah Rukh and Juhi Chawla played Mittal's son Aditya and daughter-in-law Megha respectively, while Saif Ali Khan and Rani brought alive Vanisha and Amit's romance. But the biggest surprise came after midnight. A husky voice began singing, a slight but pert figure ascended the stage and the guests went berserk. Enter Kylie Minogue. While Kylie may have been the high point of the celebrations, there was much song and dance all through. The festivities were kicked off by a sangeet, held at the 17th century Garden of Tulliers and attended by about 800 guests. Alka Yagnik and Sonu Nigam performed live. While the Mittal family performed a small skit scripted by Javed Akhtar and choreographed by Farha Khan, the guests grooved to the beats of DJ Aqueel. Next up: the engagement in the Palace of Versailles. Apparently this is the first time the palace has allowed a private function. Sources say it took Lakshmi Mittal over a year to get the requisite permission. It was a typical scene where the groom-to-be went down on his knees and slipped a ring on Vanisha's finger. This was followed by a French performance and dances, and a lavish banquet for 1,000 people. The mehndi afternoon was held at the Bristol Hotel. The mehndiwallis and churiwallis were flown in from Delhi and Mumbai, and an elaborate chaat fare by Munna Maharaj of Kolkata was a big hit. But it was the elaborate marriage preparations that really took the wedding cake. Several coaches were parked at Hotel le Grand Intercontinental to ferry the guests wherever they wanted to go. There was a 24-hour food and snacks arrangement at the coffee shop. Chef Hemant Oberoi of the Taj and Munna Maharaj, along with a host of other Indian chefs were in charge of the Indian and vegetarian cuisine. Mittal ensured that three TV channels - an Indian news channel, a Hindi movie channel, and one showing the wedding functions - were on round the clock in every guest room. The entire first floor of the hotel was converted into a beauty parlour. Make-up artists, hair stylists and sari draping specialists were stationed there for six days for the convenience of the guests.
