PD mama..adhi nee post count aa? rama kotaa? alaa perigipothundhi?
ur previous signature(the one in post#5877 etc) was the coolest one in this DB..
inthakee IBDB lo nee ID enti?do i know u?

aslo mama:HEAT lo iddari roles baaguntaayi..but DE NIRO's demeanor suited the ambience of the the movie in a better way..
thats the greatness of DE NIRO..studies not only the script but also the mise-en-scene or ambience of the movie and blends into it..
To quote from NYTimes..
Mr. De Niro's wary restraint suits the film's cool, sleek style much better than Mr. Pacino's louder, more flashily demonstrative manner. (Mr. Pacino sometimes booms and exclaims as if worried the rear balcony seats won't hear him.)....

what about godfather 1&2 ?

asalu scent of a woman lo ee dialogue elaa mention cheyyakunda vadhilesaaru?

Women! What can you say? Who made 'em? God must have been a fuckin' genius.
The hair... They say the hair is everything, you know. Have you ever buried your nose in a mountain of curls... just wanted to go to sleep forever?
Or lips... and when they touched, yours were like... that first swallow of wine, after you just crossed the desert.
Tits. WHOO-AAH! Big ones, little ones, nipples staring right out at ya, like secret searchlights. Mmm.
Legs. I don't care if they're Greek columns... or secondhand Steinways. What's between 'em... passport to heaven.
Mr Sims, there's only two syllables in this whole wide world worth hearing: pussy. Hah! Are you listenin' to me, son? I'm givin' ya pearls here.

and what about that famous WHOO-AAH..
As soon as i showed this movie to my friend he became a PACINO fan and created hotmail and yahoo id's which go WHOO_AAH
and when i suggest him a pacino movie..he asks me..is it a whoo-aah movie?
While SERPICO would be in my all time character inspiring roles..SCENT OF A WOMAN would be definetely in my top10 roles of all time..

Chalam..i've already posted my favrt pacino roles twice in IBDB in seperate threads..
pacino is great ..no second thoughts about it.. his captivating and arresting looks and his excellent voice along with equally good modulation..
sometimes his style dominates the substance and he tends to go a little overboard especially on the high-pitch deliveries .. thats the complaint i have on him..
dog day afternoon, scent of a woman and serpico are my favrts..performance-wise..

but to me..DE NIRO all the way...
rarely does a great role and equally good performance go together.. TRAVIS BICKLE from TAXI DRIVER is one of them.. such a complex and psychic character played in a subtle manner to a perfection by DE NIRO..
if 'shiva' addicted me to the world of film making ..'Taxi Driver' showed me the other side of the spectrum..made me say.. "MANNN! hollywood movies are great"..couldn't come out of this movie for the whole night..
only a Scorsese and De Niro could convince us with such complex characters..other examples.. Ragingbull and king of comedy..
As deepblue and spitfire suggested ..i'm ready for a De Niro VS pacino ..
Why dont we start with Heat?

Leedhu maava,

I visited that city thrice as my sister was living there(next to the bay bridge). I just loved that city. It has a youthful vigor to it. I loved the restaurants there especially the kind of dimpsum they served was very unique(can't find it anywhere else except NY)

As far as these movies are concerned, I guess I am lucky to have a very good video store on campus(actually in Univ. of Penn's). I visit there often and spend lot of time browsing their collection.

Enni samvatsaralu untaamoo ikkada thelavadhu kadhaa. Koddhigaa eee desam gurinchi thelusukooni velthaamani I have stopped watching mainstream movies.

Pardon the digression in this thread, but could not resist.

city of brotherly love

The city has shown little love to outsiders.

1) The booed Santa Claus on Christmas day in Veteran Stadium.
2) NBA Eastern Conf finals they boo the Candian National Anthem.
3) All they are concerned is their city and everybody in the city is united(brothers) for this one cause.

Guys:

One more releavent post by our very own Jamadagni.

################################

April 28th is the birthday of AL PACINO, THE GREAT!

Stars like Schwarzennegers might come and go, they can even become governors but
you don't come across actors like AL,who has dominated the Hollywood both in the lead and supporting roles for over three decades now! To commemorate this great actor's birthday, I invite some of my fellow members to share their experiences watching this stylish man on screen!

To start with, I am writing about two of my all time favorite movies of AL- 1)and...justice for all and 2) Donnie Brasco!

1) and....justice for all:

Arresting, captivating, brilliant, rivetting are some of the words that best describe this court room drama that fetched AL his fourth Academy Award nomination for the Best Actor- Serpico (1973), God Father III, Dog Day Afternoon(1975) and justice for all(1979)-before he finally got one for his great performance in the Scent of a Woman (for the records, Al also has won three academy awards as a supporting actor for his roles in The God Father(1972), Dick Tracy(1990) and Glengarry Glen Ross(1992).

Written by academy award winner Barry Levinson (Rainman) and Valerie Curtin and directed by Norman Jewinson ( In the heat of the night, Fiddler on the roof, Moonstruck), this movie has Al Pacino starring as Arthur Kirkland, an upcoming lawyer who strives very hard to uphold the integrity of his profession.

Kirkland is a lawyer who has some high personal values and his obduracy often lands him in trouble. The opening scene has Kirkland(Pacino) serving a sentence in jail for contempt of court ( he manhandles a judge called Henry T Fleming).

But at the same time, he takes his profession very seriously and often goes to great length to protect the interests of his clients. As things progress, the movie has Kirkland(Pacino) forcibly succumbing to the gamesmanship of some of his seniors in the judicial system(of Baltimore) to take up a case to defend a judge, who gets framed for apparently raping and sodomizing a young girl.

The senior members of the judicial system try to use the animosity between Kirkland and Fleming to divert the media attention to built up the case for the accused judge. After some dramatic turn of events, he finally exposes his client in a powerful climax scene, which probably got him the oscar nomination!

Pacino has an impending threat of being debarred from the bench for apparently tresspassing his clients interests as a defense lawyer ( after finding his client guilty, he forgets the fact that he is a defense lawyer and testifies against him by providing the priviledged information)and the seniors blackmail him to take up the (wrong) case. After some dramatic incidents that expose the dark character of the judge, Pacino explodes in the climax scene and make the judge pay for his crimes.

The movie also has several scenes that show the contrasting behavior of the practioners of the profession. While at one end there are people who become so sensitive after successfully acquitting some of the guilty ones(as they commit more crimes after coming out)
there are a lot of unsympathetic people like judge Fleming, who, under the pretext of following the letter of law, refuse to consider a report that has all the information to prove the innocence of an accused just because it came later than it was supposed to!

To cut the long story short, this movie is a tour de force for all Pacino fans.....Two big thumbs up for this Italian hunch for living through the role!

DB Bro:

Got your mail. Will get back soon :-)

Regarding DeNiro Vs Al. There is thread in IBDB archives, which I will try to find for you. As I have repeated manytimes, we can compare obly roles that these actors played and not their acting prowess itself.

The discussion would be more graceful , if you suggest two roles(similar) that they potrayed it would be real fun to discuss.

guys i do have my reservations about Al pacino.

i would like us to have a discussion about method acting in general and compare de niro and pacino.

for me pacino's performance in the scent of a woman was the BEST ever.

but would love to know your thoughts on pacino vs de niro on a comparative basis.

how about we start a thread on that exclusively

Chalam Sodara:

Excellent Thread. Good job! All time great. There are a lot of great actors in Hollywood wh have immortalized roles. But when it comes to versatility and make-beleive charcters Al is the best.

Some great scenes:

1)The Mayor John speech in City Hall.
2) The expression in his face when he is stabbed by the same person he let go.
3)The last scene in with him sitting on the steps in "Justice for all".
4) The entire movie :Glengarry Glenross is captivating.
5) Serpico when he gos to the policestation and manhandles officers who laugh at him.
6) Convincing his bosses wife to marry him in Scarface.
7) The sleepy weared out look in Insomnia.

My picks of his great performaces are Carlito Brigante, Tony D'Amato and Micheal Corleone.

Finally Carlito Brigante is my all time favorite character.

asalu scent of a woman pathaaka sthayi babai, manodi performance ki. ppl complain about him being over the top but one scene breaks all that crap. when he goes to his brother's residence for the thanksgiving dinner and the indifference they show towards him, asalu kadupu tharukku pothundi akkada acting choosthe. most notably, ekkada self-pity depict cheyyadu ( director goppathanamemo theliyedu) but at the end of the scene, picha jaali vesthundi. guddivaadu kooda bithara choopulu choodagaladu ani prove chesthaadu.

Speak about intensity, there are few actors that can can reach this guy's.GF peddha aanaleedhu first time choosinappudu. SERPICO choosi decide ayipooyaaa De Niro Gi Niro jaantha nai...PACINO is the man ani!! I guess I have watched most of his movies. Awaiting for the DVD of his latest movie PEOPLE I KNOW with Kim Basinger that is scheduled to hit shelves on July 29th! SCENT OF A WOMAN is a darling of mine!! NO ONE CAN RESIST IDIOLIZING THIS GUY AFTER WATCHING THAT MOVIE!!

* Jack Nicholson is another guy. But the only problem with him is he is like Andhrawala in our DB! He does everything as a matter of factly!!

Sorry about thread proliferation :-) but I want ppl to write what , where and how they liked this dude's performances. My recollections are hazy but ninna rathri 1.30 ki GF-2 choosthunte asalu acting ante ento soopinchadu anipinchindi.

scene: tries to convince wife to stay with him and that she'll soon forget the miscarriage, he takes the blame and tells her, will make up for it. then she reveals, it was an abortion. camera is then on his face, first look surprise, then on diane keaton, she keeps telling her sob story, camera oka 3 times pacino ni choopisthadu. each time u can see the gradual increase in his rage finally culminating in that fierce slap he gives her ( kamal saar light ga copy kottadu nayakan lo ). aa final scene kochesariki asalu kallallo roudram vachesthundi. maaaan, aa intensity is unbelievable.
