Paraskevidekatriaphobia — this is not a tongue-twister but something which most of us relate to. In simpler words this is the phobia of Friday the 13th. After nine months the day has come, the sixth day of the week and date 13th — both have forbidding reputations said to be dating back from ancient times. In America, it is the most widespread superstition — people do not drive, won’t eat in restaurants, many would not even think of setting their wedding date and the trend is now being followed in India too. "I didn’t believe in it earlier but after the famous Uphar tragedy and few smaller incidence on the same date. I have started believing in it now," said Uma Raghvan, a housewife. Friday the 13th lived up to its reputation in 1997, when a fire engulfed Uphaar cinema hall in the Capital while a show was on, claiming 59 lives. People get spooky with the date around the corner, said Adra Bhatt, a student, "People find my fear very weird but I have a reason to fear the date. Some years ago, on Friday the 13th, we had a party in the school, and since mine was a convent it was not allowed, we got caught and were suspended for fifteen days." Bhatt takes extra precaution now. It is a coincidence of sorts that none of the entrance exams are scheduled for Friday but students |
