"Deepu is getting married," my friend said as he set his tray on the table and sat down. "That's..." about to say Great...I stopped. How does one react to a news of someone's wedding, when that news is delivered as if someone just died?
"That's...news," I added tentatively, not really knowing what to say. "I mean how are you taking it?" I added cautiously. I didn't fancy a scene at McDonald's. There were a lot of kids around too.
"Oh I know it's not like she was my ex or anything. But, it's Deepu, you know!" he exclaimed daring me to react. I merely nodded, not know what to say. "She has been a great friend, and you know she fancied me sometime ago right?" I nodded again and he continued. "The thing is, I don't know it's totally selfish, but I can't picture her with anyone else!" he finished, banging his fist on the table.
"Let me get this straight. You never fancied her when she was in love with you. But now that she is getting married you don't like it?" I was confused, "Why? Because your ego is hurt that she has now found someone else?"
"It's not that easy. And no my ego is not hurt, it's..." he trailed off.
"You are jealous! She has found someone while you are still trying?" I asked rather crudely.
"No! I don't know...maybe!" he muttered but shook his head finally. "No I am not jealous so to say...it's just that, well, when we are young and all we tend to over rate this love thing. I mean we want to fall in love first and all. But see where I am. I am single again and no love in sight," he sighed. "Sometime's I wonder if I made a mistake by turning Deepu down. I mean she is sweet, good looking, and was obviously in love with me. Do you think it's better to go with someone who loves you than wait for someone you love?" he queried.
The question was thrown so unexpected at me that I was left speechless. Without realizing it, he had thrown across a very valid question. Is it really the best deal to be with someone who loves us than wait around for someone we might love or come to love, and who might never turn up?
"I...don't know. Seriously. Anyways, it's too late for you now to be having second thoughts," I explained. "I mean she is getting married now, and the last thing you want to do is jeopardise that. She is obviously sure and happy about her decision. Don't do anything to spoil that okay!" I warned him. But the thought still lingers.
We often are so blinded by what attracts us that very often we fail to realize the treasures around us. So many of us crib that we never got the true love of our life. But what about the love you turned down. It might not be your idea of perfect love, but you are the perfect idea of someone else's...and that is quite special too isn't it? We might not have found that one person who would mean the world to us yet, but what about the one we are turning down for whom we are the whole world? Or maybe we often realize the meaning of someone else's presence in our only when that presence is now threatened! The whole taken for granted phenomena? Something to think about, isn't it? |
