i watched this movie today. i too feel that sean penn does not deserve an oscar. In fact Tim robbins character did pretty well in my view. coming to the story.. i was confused at the end and disappointed the way the movie ended. Dave Boyle lost confidence with her wife and later he could not communicate the truth well just becoz he is not able to express it. Later Jimmy changed the voice that he will not kill, but did kill him. The ending scene between Sean and Jimmy too good.

dont think sean penn deserved the award for this movie. as usual, tim robbins played the complex character to the hilt and was much better than penn himself. some political machinations of the academy I am sure. I know both are anti-bush and all that but robbins courts more trouble than any body else.

To continue with previous argument , i said that paul rivers character is much deeper in contrary to ur statement 'coz paul rivers character needed other emotions too like being cold while dumping his girl friend and looking old with a dying look and guy with dogged determination to get to th woman he wants. Finally a guy who tries to kill the man who had caused so much grief to the woman he loved. A perfect fit to the oscar and Sean was totally into the character. Where as in mystic he remained as a grieving father other than that there was nothing more.

Howdy SpitFire bhai. My life is still a bitch..Was busy with academia lately. Now that summer is on and I am catching up with new movies. Interesting point you have made there about Del toro in 21 grams but My view is that the movie totally belonged to Sean penn. Though Del toro did great job in that role of guilt ridden ex convivct in 21 grams , i think given that role to any decent actor like Chris cooper would have yielded the same result.Sean penn was at his brillaint best and brought that gloomy feel to the movie with his acting and he was everything in that role. Though both movies have few similarities especially in Del Toro's role and Tim robbins role, one can easily find the shallowness of Del toro 's character and Depth of Tim robbins role that made a big difference in Academy awards. Now if you take sean's charcaters in both movies, Jimmy Markum role is shallow when compared to Sean's role in 21 grams but still it won a oscar. my view! |

Hustler Bhai: Long time no see. How is life treating you. What a coincidence. Bignole ILR and I happened to see 21 grams and Mystic RIver on concsecutive days on Monday and Tuesday Coming to to the topic of dicsussion, It was dark movie and this what Clint "Blondie" Eastwood is famous for. I have seen the movie thrice and still maintain that Sean Penn and TIm RObbind were worthy of their OScars. In fact the chararcter Jimmy Markum( Dan Lehane) original is much deeper and better written than that of Paul Rivers in 21 grams. I personally thing that Jack Jordan( Del Toro) stole the show in 21 grams. Sean was just normal. The best of Sean IMO( Poncelet) in Dead Man Wlaking, which if you are not aware was written and directed by Tim RObbins himself. It was just great that great director/actors all having a sense of human emotion and relations in Tim RObbins/Sean Penn/Clint Eastowood/Bacon and Laura Linney(Primal Fear/David Gale) and Marcia Gay Harden(Pollock, worked with cLINT in Space Cowboys) would come together along with Fishburne(Apolcypse Now, Morpheus in Matrix). I will post a more detaile note when I get home as I am still in office right now. SIngh ShivaShankar -- R U Ready |

sean penn definately deserved an oscar for I am Sam, if he got one for this movie. Movie is decent. But like most oscar winners, the entertainment value is lacking. Opinions are like assholes, everybody has one...and most of them stink |

I finally got a chance to see mystic river this weekend.pretty ordinary story and passable and i wonder what's so special about this movie that made it to go to the oscars. To me this movie was just another a suspense thriller. The most surprising thing thing about this movie is Sean penn. I am totally surprised how he deserved the best actor oscar for this kind of role.I some times think that the Academy award selection committee should publish the guidelines for the selection process. Sean penn was much much better in 21 grams, this movie belonged to Tim robbins and Kevin beacon. The only rationale that one can come up with is , may be the academy wiseheads acknowledged sean penn's contribution to the film industry by giving this award. Tim robbins justified his best supporting actor award with his performance and clearly he was little better compared to Benicio del toro in 21 grams. When sean penn was preferred ahead of Bill murray , i thought Sean penn might have had rocked in Mystic river( i was aware of his acting capabilities in Iam Sam and other movies)but now i am seriously dissappointed that bill murray didnt get the award despite of his good performance in lost in translation. He(Bill) was the only bright spot of otherwise a dull movie. Now one might argue that Johnny depp also would have been a good choice but having watched bill murray in lost in translation I must say he was best deserved in that lot. My view! |
