Whats your take on your action, bikes and chicks flick - Super? I was confident from day one since barring a few unique plots most of them are sounding similar. However we chose a basic storyline and developed it to perfection. We decided that it should be a tale of friends-turned-foes. And after watching Dhoom, we incorporated bikes and that is it. There are no more similarities, I must say. To play a biker I grew my hair. Then I chose a heroine who would suit the flashy guy. We also fused love and comedy but the film will have measured emotions. We opted for stylish narrative and razor-sharp takings to grip the audience. Being a friend, I had good tuning with director Puri Jagannath to come up with a 'breezy entertainer'. Nowadays most of the audience are either riding or pillion-riding so identifying with a 'biker' will be easier and the breathtaking racing would leave the audience spellbound. We have attempted something out of the routine. The recent hit Aparichitudu had a familiar plot (corruption) but interesting narration made a big difference. Do you mean to suggest that 'plots' have become redundant? Not at all. I had many plot-driven hits in my career but the stories I have been listening for quite some time are sounding familiar with few mandatory changes. For instance, my recent hit Nenunnanu had similarities with my earlier block-buster Nuvvu Vasthavani. If in the former, the heroine loses her boyfriend because of the hero, in the later, she loses her eyesight and in both, the hero helps them till the end. Similarly I insisted the director of my nephew Sumanth's film Satyam to draw inspiration from my Nuwu Vasthavani and it worked. However, I would love to do a film with an 'unique plot' if it comes my way until then 'narrative-driven' films look a good option. You kept claiming that Mass had a routine plot but it turned out to be a blockbuster? Do you hope that your honesty will work again for Super? I wanted to inform the audi-ence that they are not going watch a new story but never-theless they would be enter-tained. Well-mounted songs, good action sequences and loads of comedy probably impressed the viewers making Mass one of the biggest hits of my career. Similarly I am assuring a stylish film with subtle melodrama in Super besides promising exhilarating experi-ence enabling the audience to understand that they are going to watch a 'bit' different film. If we can remain truthful to our claims than the audience would definitely start believing us and arrive at theatres with some idea. Adrelian-pushing scenes will grip the audience. I have signed Hindi artistes to give our film a 'new look' and not to release it all over. First I want to gauge the response from Telugu audience and then I'll think abut other areas. However I'll not be re-making it in any other language. You seem to believe that films are meant only to entertain, overlooking the contribution of art cinema? Personally I believe that films are meant for 'entertainment' but I have nothing against art filmmakers. After a stressful day, the audience should relax watching a film instead of bur-dening with few heavy thoughts. Personally I like to watch big entertainers like Batman Returns and a major chunk of the audience enjoys the same. I cannot make films for a 'miniscule' section of the audience and critics rather I would love to cater to wider section. I cannot relate to a maker like Nagesh Kukunoor who made spoof on Indian cinema in Bollywood Calling since he has actually insulted the viewers who patron-ize mainstream cinema than the makers per se. But it failed to impress. How has been your 19-year journey as an actor and how could you retain the skill of spotting young directors? It has been a real roller-coaster ride. I had seen many highs and lows but I just enjoyed my profession. Even now big success gives me joy and flops depress me but my attitude in receiving them has changed. I worked with both established directors and newcomers but I loved working with freshers since their confidence and fresh-ness rubs on you. I did a few Hindi films but I loved my innings in Telugu for love they showered on me. I have introduced around 10 to 12 directors. First I should like them and then only comes the script. I can make out his passion in just two or three sittings. Besides impressing me he should have an 'open-mind' while interacting with my production team. He should definitely have some 'com-mon sense' since scripts can be altered or replaced any time. Right now I don't have any person in mind since it always happened overnight. After playing a flamboyant biker you would be appearing as a soft-spoken disciple of Lord Ram in your next Sri Ramadasu'? Do you have to do some homework and after a gap you are working with your father and legendary actor ANR? My mind has to just settle down a bit and nothing more is required. Homework is totally ruled out since I never believed in method acting. I believe in 'spontaneity' and I can slip into the character within no time. But I'll be more peaceful because I am not the producer. Even after receiving enough appreciation for playing a saint in Annamayya I was not looking around for historical roles. This project happened out of the blue and everything fell in place. I am happy to work with my father in a prestigious project. I have to do a another film for my friend and producer Sivaprasad Reddy. These are the two projects on my mind as of now. |
