http://www.deccan.com/home/homedetails.asp#Relianc e offers power plant Reliance offers power plant Hyderabad, July 15: The Reliance group has proposed to set up a 2,000 MW power plant near Kakinada, utilising the natural gas source discovered by the company in the Bay of Bengal. A delegation from Reliance group, led by J Chalasani and P V L Madhava Rao, met Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhar Reddy here on Thursday and mooted the proposal. It will be the company’s first power plant in South India. The company is planning to set up a similar gas-based power project at Dadri in Uttar Pradesh. Energy Department officials said that the Reliance team explained their plans to the Chief Minister and stressed the advantages of having a gas-based power plant at Kakinada. The location is near natural gas reserves found by the Reliance group in the Bay of Bengal. This would bring down transportation costs to a great extent. The allocation of land and other infrastructural facilities to set up the project were also discussed. The government has evinced keen interest in the project and asked an official committee to look into modalities such as cost and tariff. The government would examine whether it should go in for a power purchase agreement with Reliance or ask it to participate in the international competitive bidding. There is an expectation that Reliance power would be available at cheaper rate. “In Dadri, where gas is to be transported from Andhra Pradesh, Reliance has offered a tariff of Rs 2 per unit,” Energy Secretary D K Panwar said. “We can expect at least 40 paise less for the Kakinada plant,” Energy Department Secretary D K Panwar said. The State proposed that Reliance gas could be made available to other gas-based power plants. On its part, Reliance offered to supply gas to industries including Godavari Fertilisers and Nagarjuna Fertilisers. Reliance also proposed to lay a gas pipeline all over the State as part of their “Well-to-Wall” project. “The group wants the power project to come up in the first quarter of 2007 when the gas will actually be explored,” an official said.
