With anger-driven Athadu registering sensational openings, teen sensation Mahesh Babu has resolved to do more ‘familiar’ plots bidding adieu to unique plots like Naani. The actor launched comedy filmmaker Trivikram into a star-maker with his latest hit which has edge over films of this genre since they focussed more on ‘impact’ than on lengthy stunts to deliver a ‘slick’ actioner. He didn’t have any inhibitions playing an assassin since love, comic and sentiments substantially diluted it. His next film with hotshot director Puri Jagannath is set against ‘violent’ backdrop and he is glad to team up with hit-maker MS Raju for Sanyam. Though he has a long list of films in the pipeline, he would break the order to do a film for Athadu duo - Kishore and Trivikram - anytime even without hearing the ‘script’. He believes that Athadu also has remake potential and claims to have received a congratulatory call from Tamil star Vijay. Excerpts. Did the terrific openings for Athadu come as a big surprise since it had a familiar plot and and comedy filmmaker Trivikram as director? Not at all. If you have noticed, all my films took huge openings so we were just anticpating it. We were more confident this time since besides my twin-shade character, we also had a ‘solid’ story blending varied emotions like anger, love and sentiments in right measure. And also we had the advantage of a long weekend. I was taken by surprise with Trivikram’s picture-perfect narration and found intrinsic action in his plot. He fine tuned it and impressed us with his stylied takings. I have also resolved to do ‘familiar plots’ to bring cheers to my following and have shelved the idea of doing experimental plots. Besides Andhra Pradesh, it is going great guns in other cities like Chennai and Bangalore and there is a heavy demand in overseas including an extended week in US. It did take some time in making it since we all craved for ‘perfection’ and our confidence stands vindicated. I would do a film for the same team - producer Kishore and Trivikram - any time even without insisting on a script. I also intend to do tasteful commercial films. Do you feel that it had better action than your last release Arjun? Also romantic moments were interesting. I do agree that Arjun had one of the best choreographed action but this one has an edge over it since we relied more on ‘impact’ than on lengthy action. To make it visually captivating, we opted for stylised and realistic action and it worked in our favour. Crisp takings and razor-sharp cuts make it one of the best action films in recent times. Even my performance was matured and adequate. Trivikram kept improvising on his shots and with the help of capable cameraman Guhan, he could deliver a ‘well-crafted’ film to join the list of action directors. Even the romantic scenes were well-executed and Trisha’s spontaneity reduced our work load. Undoubtedly, she is one of the best actresses around. But the resolution of CBI obsolving all your crimes as an assassin is unbelieavable. Would you insist on novel professions? (Smiles) It was a commercial entertainer and we had to round it up on a ‘fairy-tale’ note. We had no second thoughts about it so we intentionally diluted the anger with soft emotions like love and sentiment to make it an ‘all-round’ film. I didn’t have any inhibitions playing an assassin since I liked the ‘novel’ profession and backdrop. We need to cater to the vastly changing tastes of the audience and our fresh approach was well-received. Similarly I would look out for novel professions but they should invariably fit into our commercial format - ideally like Athadu. With Athadu becoming another milestone, I can proudly announce that I have shrugged off the Okadu hangover, both in terms of collections as well as themetically. Does your next film with Puri have a mafia backdrop? You seem to prefer good technicians like Puri and Gunasekar? Besides their technical prowess, they have come up with ‘strong’ scripts so I am working with them. My film with Puri doesn’t have an underworld backdrop but it will have violent backdrop and would commence in September. Athadu took some time in the making but I have decided to have atleast three releases a year from now. Again Gunasekar has narrated an interesting concept and I will be looking forward to it. I am glad to team up with MS Raju who gave me Okadu. Our Sanyam will not be a patriotic film but a tasteful commercial entertainer. I am also discussing scripts with directors Vijayabhaskar, Vinayak and Jagthi and will be finalised very soon. Like Oadu, do you feel that Athadu has remake potential? Defintely. Because it has an universal theme and it would be ideal for any language including Tamil. I did receive a call from Tamil star Vijay apprecaiting our work and I think negotiations are going on for Tamil rights. How does it feel to deliver a hit after your marriage to Hindi actress Namrata Shirodkar? I am doubly happy to have a hit immediately after my marriage. Now I have become more mature and responsible after tying the knot. I am also looking forward to work with my father and veteran actor Krishna soon. http://www.screenindia.com/fullstory.php?content_i d=11059 |
