vidha bhaarathi, at least in Telugu (and I think it is true of vividhabhaarathi as a whole) did not become commercial until late 1970/early 1971. Until that time, there used to be only one daily Telugu songs program that was popular: the 4:30 program on Ceylon Broadcasting Corporation (later Srilanka Broadcasting Corporation). The main channels of AIR (hyderabad, Vijayawada etc) would have one 30 minute program and a couple of 15 minute programs of film songs a week, and the other programs like kaarmikula kaaryakramam may play an occasional film song. So, until vividha bhaarathi went commercial (I would say December 1970 or more likely January 71), there wasn't that much Telugu film music on the airwaves. It all changed with Vividha bhaarathi offering almost 2.5 hours of Telugu film music everyday in different time slots, and in that process diverting most of the regular listenership from the variety of programs offered by regular AIR stations. Also, until that time, the announcers on AIR used to only identify the film and singers; but vividha bhaarathi, like Ceylon, began identifying the lyricist as well as the MD. Courtesy-V.Jampala |
