'Iron' Greg Chappell!
The Indian cricket board has for now diffused the tussle between captain Sourav Ganguly and coach Greg Chappell. There are those who believe that the Prince of Kolkata has razed Chappell's forces in battle to once again restore his supreme authority on Team India. The truth, however, is far from it. In reality, this conflict is not over by any stretch of imagination. It was just the first round of the bout, and have no illusions, Chappell is leading on all fronts - punches, points and panache. There's a lot more drama left in this fight. However, there are still a few rounds left before someone lands the knockout punch.
Ganguly on backfoot
The picture put forward by the BCCI has been that of a victorious Indian captain. Ganguly can be seen calm, collected and smiling after he shrugged off serious accusations made by Chappell in a 'leaked' e-mail to the board. After all, the Bengal tiger, who was before the meeting in the opposition corner and fighting tooth and nail for his survival, forced the Australian to agree on an uneasy truce. However, looks can be deceiving. That Ganguly agreed to work with Chappell in spite of proving the Indian coach lied (at least according to the board) about him feigning injuries gives an indication to who really won the backstage battle. Never once did Ganguly push for Chappell's removal. If there is anyone feeling uneasy and insecure with this ceasefire, it's Ganguly.
Change of heart!
The Indian captain, in front of the review committee of the board, reportedly even professed his respect for Chappell and pledged to play under him. His comments came as a shock, considering that only a few days earlier, Ganguly had urged everyone - the media, administrators and passionate fans - to deliberate over the character of the coach! "What can you say about a man, who shakes your hand (to signal truce) and then sends a complaint to the board behind your back," Ganguly had said. What forced a sudden change in heart of the Indian skipper? Has he, probably, finally come to terms with the fact that his days in the side are numbered and working against the Australian might not be a wise option?
Chappell leads 5-1
On the other side of the picture is Chappell, who hasn't uttered a word since the whole drama was played out at the BCCI review meet. The Indian coach knows he has done his duty by informing higher authorities of the continual nuisances in the team. None of the six charges were categorically denied by board chief Ranbir Singh Mahendra in his media briefing, except for the issue of Ganguly feigning injuries and ducking practice sessions which was passed off as a "miscommunication". Not a word was said about Ganguly's alleged tactics of "divide and rule" or the more serious issue of the Indian captain not being "physically and mentally" fit to lead the team! It seems the board has understood and accepted most of the coach's findings.
No place for complacency
Chappell has credentials to protect and would be the first person to wish Ganguly a quick return to form. It would only help the Australian's cause of putting India on the path to victory and consistency, which in turn makes Chappell's resume all the more attractive. But the coach has been bold enough to think of other, more likely, possibilities and convince the board to view them in the same vein. Chappell, during Tuesday's meeting, persuaded the board to constitute another review committee after the 12 one-dayers against Sri Lanka and South Africa. By this he has made sure that each player in the side, including the captain, has a fair chance to prove his mettle. In the larger scheme of things though, it ensures that players, especially the captain, cannot slip into a comfort-zone because in just over a month their performances would be again up for scrutiny. And the next time many might not get another chance.
Gathering support
Chappell did his credentials no harm before the review committee as he received an important "thumbs up" for his man-management skills from a member who toured with the Indian team in Sri Lanka in July-August. "It is distressing to see that Chappell is being portrayed as some kind of control-freak in relations to team members. From my Sri Lanka experience, I can safely say that he was most open and honest with team members and encouraged everyone to speak up their minds," said a member of the team management on the Sri Lankan tour. "He has been encouraging everyone to develop their own rationale. It's just not six-hat theory and all. I find it amazing when I read that he is stifling to others because my observation was exactly the opposite." The Chappell movement is gathering momentum each day.
Slow poison
One of the other significant issues discussed at the meeting was the possibility of the Indian team having separate Test and one-day captains. Chappell was assured that the issue would be raised at another board meeting next month. If implemented, bifurcation of captaincy would further thrust Ganguly into the wilderness of Indian cricket. Slowly and steadily, but surely, it will force the Prince of Kolkata into the confinement of his own castle. The future looks more and more gloomy for the Indian skipper, unless somehow, miraculously, he can find his long lost form.
Natural selection: fittest will survive
Ganguly isn't the only one being targeted by Chappell. The coach is looking to take Team India forward by overhauling the whole rudimentary cricket structure that exists in the country. He took a giant step towards this objective by convincing the likes of Jagmohan Dalmiya and Ranbir Singh Mahendra to trash the selection committee based on zones. Though the final decision still rests with the working committee of the board, recommendations by such a high-profile panel are unlikely to be rejected. Once a professional selection commission is in place it will be harder for underperforming players like Ganguly to keep their place in the team. Past records won't count for much as merit would take precedence over ancient glory in the new setup.
Together we stand
Chappell even swayed the panel into recommending that the coach should have more say while selecting the squad for a tour and playing XI for the match. This would vastly hack the power Ganguly currently enjoys, especially on an away tour. If put into place, the rule would instruct the captain to thrash out a mutually agreeable compromise with the think-tank for the best playing XI. Dilution of the influence a chosen few enjoy in Indian cricket has always been a priority for Chappell as he bids to instil team spirit in the squad. And all the signals are pointing towards him achieving this target.
Frazer finds shelter under Greg
There were rumours abound before the review committee meeting. One of them was that although it was improbable for the axe to fall on Chappell, a furious Ganguly might find other methods to inflict some damage on the Australian. It was thought that the panel might agree to remove Ian Frazer, an expert roped in by Chappell to help the team. But that did not happen. The Indian board made it clear that sports scientist Frazer will continue to assist the coach. Although Chappell's bid to get a proper contract for Frazer failed, at least the Australian made sure his long-time partner wasn't fired. "Frazer will continue to join the team from time to team before the various series. We are not thinking of replacing him," a top board source said.
Tough rounds ahead
Tuesday's review committee meeting has clearly been an unheralded victory of sorts for Chappell. His claims haven't been contradicted at all by the board, which as everyone expected went all out to protect one of its own (Ganguly and Dalmiya enjoy a close friendship). As hard as they tried, it wasn't enough to put the Indian captain in the driver's seat. The second round of the bout begins when selectors announce the team for the Sri Lanka one-dayers. It is unlikely to end there. A decision though is expected in the third round, scheduled after the South African series.
