...concluding part ANR got his first film offer from Sri Ghantasala Balaramayya of Pratibha Films. ANR's brother was overjoyed and wanted to send him immediately but Dukkipati intervened. Dukkipati felt that since ANR was portraying female roles so far, he would have trouble all of sudden to play the hero of a film. He felt that it would probably be alright if it was a social fim but Balaramayya had wanted ANR to play the role of Sri Rama in his film "Sita Rama Jananam". There was a lot of advice given by friends both to take up the role and not to but ANR left the final decision to Dukkipati. Keeping ANR's future in mind Dukkipati finally decided to let him join films. He however did not want the dramatic society at the Excelsior to shut down and also wanted ANR to have a back up in case he failed to succeed in films. Thus they decided that ANR would be in Madras acting in films for 20 days in a month and for the remaining 10 he would return to Gudiwada to be a part of their dramatic society. On May 7th 1944 ANR and Dukkipati boarded the Mail to Madras and reached there the next afternoon. Dukkipati took ANR to the office of Pratibha Films, handed ANR to Balaramayya and immediately returned to Gudiwada. During one of his visits to Madras Dukkipati stopped by at the Pratibha office to check the well-being of ANR. He came to know that Sri Gudavalli Rambrahmam was not doing well and was admitted to a nursing home. Since they knew each other, he went to Ranga Nursing Home to pay him a visit. Gudavalli mentioned that he was planning to make a film "Maya Lokam" based on a burra katha called "Kambhoja Raju" and was looking for a good actor preferably around 19-20 years old to play the role of King Sarabhandi. Dukkipati felt that if he told him about ANR, it might come across as if he was recommending his friend, so he quietly told Gudavalli that he would return to Gudiwada, and enquire for a suitable lad for that role. After reaching Gudiwada, Dukkipati immediately wrote a letter to Gudavalli that a boy by the name of Akkineni Nageswara Rao was already in Madras at the office of Pratibha Films working for Ghantasala Balaramayya in the movie Seeta Rama Jananam. He informed Gudavalli to go there and check him in person. In a few days time, Dukkipati received a letter from ANR informing him of Gudavalli's visit to Pratibha office and that Balaramayya had put in a good word for him. ANR did not want to lose this great opportunity to work under his direction. Since Dukkipati knew Gudavalli, ANR wanted him to recommend him to Gudavalli. Gudavalli had earlier directed great films like Mala Pilla and Raithu Bidda, thus if ANR were to act under his direction that would be a big boost to his career. Keeping this in mind and also ANR's craving to work under him, Dukkipati alongwith his friend Nimmagadda Krishna Rao went to meet the Raja of Challapalli and explained the matter. The Raja called Gudavalli and put in a word for ANR. After a month, Dukkipati received a letter from Gudavalli that they were finalizing the cast for Maya Lokam and hence to urgently see him in Madras. Before leaving for Madras, Dukkipati went and met the Raja to convey this news and this time the Raja himself called Gudavalli and urged him to take ANR. Dukkipati reached Madras and took ANR alongwith him to the Sarada office in Tenaampeta. Rehearsals were going on so they sent in a messenger with their visiting card and waited outside. An hour passed by. Suddenly they heard a loud shout - "Aa Gudiwada aayanni lopaliki rammanu" - from Gudavalli. Both ANR and Dukkipati's faces turned white. They had jumped out of their skins on hearing that loud shout. ANR was too scared even to move so Dukkipati went inside. On seeing him, Gudavalli started to scream and shout. "How dare you make the Raja call me and make recommendations? I know your father well, he is a gentleman and well respected. Since you had referred Nageswara Rao to me, I had written a letter to you stating that I would give him a role. Even then you went to the Raja and made him call me. Since I don't have a say anymore, you can take over... go ahead and book him... Satyam, get the contract papers and give them to this man. Go ahead and write how much you want to pay your friend...SIGN IT". Gudavalli was going on and on this way for sometime. Finally, Dukkipati took a seat and calmly started to explain everything that had happened. "You wanted someone in the age group of 19-20. Nageswara Rao had all the qualities that you had mentioned, but I did not know that you had already booked Santa Kumari and Rajamma. Before I came to Madras, I had just visited the Raja to inform him about your letter and that I was coming here to meet you. I had no intentions of making him call you again. He voluntarily called you." Slowly Gudavalli started to calm down - "Hmm sare, vaadi cheta agreement papers meda santhakam cheyinchu." That is the reason why people used say that he was Durvaasa when angry and Bhola Sankara when in a giving mood. When a relieved Dukkipati came out of the office, he did not find ANR there. He was scared and had run away to the Pratibha office on hearing Gudavalli scream. So Dukkipati signed in the witness column and returned the next day with ANR to sign the contract. ANR signed a contract for Rs. 500 a month. In those days, nobody used to come forward from the Nizam area to distribute films. But, since the previous movies of Gudavalli (Mala Pilla and Raithu Bidda) were huge hits, Deccan Films of Nizam came upto make an offer for Maya Lokam. Gudavalli arranged a dinner in honor of Deccan films. He planned to intoroduce the new hero, heroine of his film to the distributors and so sent them an advanced invitation. If ANR was to stand out in front of Rajamma, he had to appear taller than normal. Dukkipati informed ANR to wear shoes with a good amount of heel to appear tall. The hero, heroine were made to stand next to each other and approved by Gudavalli. They were next presented to the distributors who were more than happy with the good looking pair. ANR was confirmed to play the role of Sarabhandi. Thus ANR got the opportunity to act along side other stalwarts like Sri Govindarajulu Subba Rao and Sri C.S.R Anjaneyulu. With everything falling in place, Dukkipati returned to Gudiwada and was once again busy with his activities with the dramatic society and Khaadi Bhandaar. Suddenly one day, he received a telegram from Gudavalli to start immediately for Madras. This sudden telegram troubled Dukkipati. Several thoughts crossed his mind, He wondered whether Gudavalli did not like ANR, or if ANR was not doing a good job or even worse did he commit any crime? "If something goes wrong what will happen to ANR’s career?" Dukkipati immediately left for Madras and hurriedly went to the Pratibha office to meet ANR. This sudden appearance of Dukkipati surprised ANR. ANR said that he did not know anything about the telegram and why it was sent. He however informed that since a month, Gudavalli was very serious during shooting and felt that he was not talking to him properly. Eager to know what happened, Dukkipati reached the Sarada office, sent in his visiting card and waited outside in tension. He soon heard Gudavalli's friendly voice inviting him inside. Dukkipati had expected some disaster to have befallen when he first came here, but was stunned upon hearing Gudavalli's friendly and hospitable voice. “We have completed shooting on a set. I have just seen the rush prints. Nageswara Rao is very good. He has great acting skills.” said Gudavalli. "I wanted to show you the rushes and hence sent you the telegram. Come let us go to the studio." On hearing this, Dukkipati was relieved and overjoyed. However, Gudavalli warned him not to convey these praises to ANR as he felt that they would go to his head and make him arrogant. As the pair started for the studio, ANR reached Sarada office for rehearsals. As soon as Gudavalli saw ANR he said "Orey abbai! Raa! Car ekku". ANR was perplexed. He did not understand what was going on but inanimatedly followed Gudavalli's orders and boarded the car. Midway to the studio, Gudavalli blurted out "Orey abbai bheshukgaa chesaavu raa...paikostaav. Rushes choopinchaalani Madhusudhana Rao ni pilipinchaanu." ANR heaved a sigh of relief. Dukkipati could not control himself and laughed out loud as Gudavalli who had earlier warned him about showering praises on ANR, himself could not control his emotions. Thus began the journey of a Legend. |

Pre-independence the British Raj started recreation clubs in important centers assuming that the youth would be mislead by the Indian National Congress. One such club - Excelsior Club - was established in Mudinepalli. As it is common in any such club, card games and gambling were popular in this club too. In order to safe-guard the youth from this, a dramatic society was formed by the elders of the village. They started off enacting a play called "Jayantha Jayapalam". Famed Producer of yester-years Sri Dukkipati Madhusudhana Rao belonged to a nearby village Peyyeru. He was a committee member in the dramatic society at the Excelsior. One day in conversation with Sri Pendyala Nageswara Rao he expressed that they were in search for a new heroine for their play. Pendyala informed him that in Gudiwada, a boy was performing the role of Deva Devi in the play "Vipra Narayana" produced by Sri Buddiraju Sri Ramamurthy. He was extremely talented and was being appreciated by one and all. One day Madhusudhana Rao, Pendyala and the President of the dramatic society Sri Koduri Achchayya went to Gudiwada and saw the young lad rehearsing his role of Deva Devi. They were very impressed of what they saw and wanted to somehow entice him to join their troupe. So Madhusudhana Rao immediately went and purchased a silver cup and at the end of the play presented it to the lad. The lad was overwhelmed and excited at being recognized and presented the silver cup amongst the many other performers. Later, Madhusudhana Rao met and convinced Sri Rama Brahmam (the lad’s elder brother) to allow the boy to join their dramatic society. That lad was none other than the to be Legend Sri Akkineni Nageswara Rao. The association of Dukkipati and Akkineni was thus formed. They went on to create many wonders at the box office with some glorious movies. But that was later. The first play that ANR acted for the Excelsior was a play written by Sri Koneru Kutumba Rao (a Telugu lecturer at the Gudiwada high school) called "Aasaa Jyothi". This play got good reviews and got a very good response. Word soon spread about it in the nearby villages and towns and so the play had to be performed in many surrounding places. One government officer who saw the play was impressed by ANR’s performance and bestowed upon him the title "Sweet Nightingale". He also received an award from the officer. This probably was the first of the millions of awards and rewards that he has so far received. After the tremendous success of Aasa Jyothi, the dramatic society at the Excelsior started to look out for new plays. Sri Surapaneni Sobhana Rao who was a sanskrit lecturer at the board high school in Gudiwada wrote "Satyanveshanam" which dealt with widow remarriage and the removal of caste and religious based societies. ANR was to portray the role of a widow who falls in love and remarries. This play was to be performed at the shastipoorti of the renowned poet Sri Tripuraneni Ramaswamy Choudhary. All preparations were made for the play to be presented when news reached them that the collector had denied permission for the play to be performed. In those days, the British government was worried that revolutionary plays could affect the youth to rebel against them and so were keenly on the watch for them. There was a government regulation in those days that the script of every play had to be approved by the regional collector. Due to the progressive thoughts in Satyanveshanam, the collector declined to approve it. After a few months, the script was changed and toned down to a large extent and the collector finally approved it. At the same time the dramatic society at the Excelsior also rehearsed another play "Telugu Talli" written by Vedanta Kavi. The troupe started performing these three plays at not only district level but also in Guntur, and East and West Godavari regions with Gudiwada as the main center. ANR attained immense popularity as the heroine of these plays. These plays were continuously performed for three years at various places sweeping the crowds of their feet wherever they were performed. to be continued... |
