God gave Shoaib Akhtar much more than he does most mortals. He gave him thighs the size of tree trunks, a face that looks menacing every time he sees someone with a bat in his hand, truckloads of self-confidence, and also the ability to bowl faster than most people. But when it came to the heart and brains, He turned stingy. Watching Shoaib during the India-Pakistan series was seeing a farce unfold. And when the climax arrived, with the quickie running away from the scene of battle at Rawalpindi, one realised that Inzamam knew what he was talking about when he said that his premier fast bowler had a weak mind. By preferring the comforts of the dressing room to the heat of battle, Shoaib conclusively showed Pakistan, and the rest of the world, just how much of a choker he is. If Inzamam has his way, Shoaib would have a lot of free time in future. That is the way it should be. A medical committee set up by the Pakistan Cricket Board will soon let us know the truth, but reports now have it that Shoaib was faking an injury and sitting in the dressing room only to settle scores with his captain. That is behaviour barely fit enough for kindergarten and no international team should have anything to do with such people. Petulance may look cute on children, but it is positively ugly and vulgar on mature men on whom the pride of a nation rests. It was the `mother of all series’, coming as it did after nearly 15 years, and one can understand how let down Inzamam would have felt on the third day of the final Test as Shoaib flitted in and out of the Indian dressing room, eager to get a visa for a commercial shoot, even as his team saw a dream wilt in the Rawalpindi heat. Contrast Shoaib’s attitude to that of Anil Kumble, who bowled a long and probing spell to Lara and company, with his jaw heavily plastered, during India’s last tour of West Indies. Go back to 1981 when Kapil, who was barely able to walk, took painkilling injections and bowled India to a famous victory in Melbourne. Or remember the late Malcolm Marshall’s heroics against England at Headingley in 1984. The England fielders were about to walk back to the pavilion after the ninth West Indian wicket had fallen, when Marshall, who had broken his left thumb while fielding early in the match, walked out and batted one-handed, long enough for Larry Gomes to complete a century. He then strode out, his left hand encased in plaster, and finished England with figures of 7 for 53. These are feats by real men, something that cardboard heroes with a cultivated swagger and a newly acquired accent cannot even dream of. It is not only Shoaib’s attitude that stood exposed by the end of the series. The world now knows that the Pakistani spearhead, whose only answer to any problem is speed, speed and more speed, is a bowler with severe limitations, one incapable of swinging the new ball, white or red. There was no reverse swing on offer as well, and much before the end of the series, it was amply clear that this one trick pony’s bluff had been called. If Shoaib stood out for his mule-headed attitude, two rookies from India attracted attention for all the right reasons. Irfan Pathan’s performance was not surprising because any leftie who has the ability to bend the ball back into the righthander will make life tough for batsmen, but Balaji did surprise a lot of people. When he started out, the lean medium pacer from Chennai was as predictable as they come, but now armed with a newly developed outswinger, he has given a new twist to India’s fast bowling tale. Balaji’s arrival is good news for India, but it is something that will leave a few young men very uneasy. Less than two months ago, Zaheer Khan’s would have been the first name to be pencilled down among the Indian quicks. His Baroda teammate has now earned that right, and on wickets in the sub continent, India is not likely to go in with more than two quick bowlers. Captains are more comfortable with a left-right combination, and in such a scenario, where would it leave Zaheer, and for that matter, Nehra? And has Ajit Agarkar played his last Test at 26? It is a little hard on these youngsters, but for Indian cricket and Sourav Ganguly, it is actually a nice problem to have. http://server1.msn.co.in/overthetop/ |
