http://www.hindu.com/2005/12/22/stories/2005122203 900200.htm Reaping it rich at filmgoers' cost Special Correspondent Bumper opening for the film released close on the heels of G.O. hiking ticket rates -------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Upper class tickets priced around Rs. 70 leaves filmgoers disappointed Tickets in black sold for a staggering Rs. 300 to Rs. 1,000! Chiranjeevi's latest starrer rakes in the moolah -------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ HYDERABAD: Immense hype, almost double the price for tickets and black market prices that shot through the roofs of theatres. Chiranjeevi's `Jai Chiranjeeva,' which was released in 500 theatres all over the State with a record 300 prints, left deep holes in the pockets of filmgoers here on Friday. After two postponements, the film was released close on the heels of the G.O. increasing the ticket rates of films of big stars by 75 per cent in the first two weeks of their release. Jacked up rates Needless to say, the film reaped a rich harvest with bumper openings all over, trade pundits said. How big the harvest is will be known in next two weeks when the film's fate is decided at the box office. Will the film be able to draw the family crowds in the wake of the jacked up ticket rates is another big question. The admission rates in Prasad's multiplex here was hiked from Rs. 60 to Rs. 100 while in other theatres in the twin cities and surrounding municipalities it was increased from Rs. 35 to Rs. 60. In Visakhapatnam, viewers had to shell out a lot more. Ticket rates were hiked to Rs. 70 in all eight theatres where the film is being screened and viewers had to pay a surcharge of Rs. 5 per ticket as the district administration mandated that all the upper class tickets were sold only through the eSeva facility, ostensibly to give no room for black marketing and stampedes at cinema halls. In Vijayawada where the film is being screened in seven theatres, tickets in Alankar, Apsara and Annapurna theatres were increased from Rs. 40 to Rs. 68 and Rs. 30 to Rs. 60 respectively. In Guntur ticket rates in Hollywood/Bollywood complex were hiked from Rs. 40 to Rs 70. `Unreasonable' hike "The hike is unreasonable. Chiranjeevi has a legion of fans, but not all are rich. We cannot afford the increased rates," said a filmgoer at a theatre in RTC crossroads. Worse, tickets in the black were being sold anywhere between Rs. 300 and Rs. 1,000. At Thagadapuvalasa, 25 km from Visakhapatnam, tickets were said to be sold in black for a staggering Rs. 1,000 each! "Only crazy fans will buy at such rate, not the regular moviegoers," a group of students who returned disappointed without tickets said.
