An assistant cameraman was electrocuted while trying to shoot an underwater sequence on the sets of Sainikudu, starring Mahesh Babu and Trisha.
A.B. Kamalakar, 34, was standing in a pool when an underwater light short-circuited, giving him a powerful shock. He died while being rushed to Care Hospital, police said.
At least 25 others escaped miraculously as they stepped out of the pool at the right moment.
Mahesh Babu was also standing by the side of the pool watching helplessly as Kamalakar got electrocuted. He was supposed to enter the pool in a few minutes.
The crew was trying to shoot a scene in which the hero saves some hutment dwellers caught in a flood.
A huge swimming pool-like structure was set up at Radhika Gardens in Devaremjal for this and huts and houses were put up in a half-submerged manner.
There were about 30 persons in the pool, including light boys and stunt-men when a leak from a hydro-light spread shock waves.
Petbasheerabad Sub-Inspector K. Srinath Reddy said that other people swiftly scampered over the huts and houses but Kamalakar, who was heavilybuilt, was unable to do so.
“Hearing his cries, they stopped the generator and rushed him to the hospital,” said the police officer. “But he died on the way.” Chandra Mohan, the production manager of the film said that the director Gunasekhar was also outside the pool when the incident occurred.
Kamalakar was a resident of Janapriya Apartments and is survived by his wife and two kids. His body was shifted to Gandhi mortuary and an autopsy would be conducted on Saturday.
The film is produced by Ashwini Dutt and shooting began in October 2005.
Police have registered a case under 174 CRPC (suspicious death) as per the complaint lodged by Kamalakar’s father Subba Rao. |
