O'Neal thanks Lakers fans for support

Associated Press
LOS ANGELES -- The Big Guy had a big-hearted message for his Los Angeles fans Sunday.

Shaquille O'Neal took out a full-page advertisement in the Los Angeles Times to thank his fans for their support during his eight years with the Los Angeles Lakers. O'Neal signed last week with the Miami Heat, marking the end of an era during which the Lakers won three NBA championships.

"I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your incredible support over the last eight years," O'Neal said in the ad, which included a picture of him smiling and gripping a basketball in one hand. "I am moving on to the next chapter in my career, but I will never forget the support that you gave me."

O'Neal, whose dispute with Lakers management led to his departure, told Lakers fans, "I will miss each and every one of you."

"You have been there with me through it all -- we never could have won any of the championships without you," he said.

The Lakers are rebuilding their team around superstar guard Kobe Bryant, who signed a seven-year contract worth more than $136 million. Rudy Tomjanovich will replace Phil Jackson as coach, and former Laker Vlade Divac, who was traded in1996, will return to replace O'Neal at center.

ofcourse Lakers LOST and i do agree that Detroits did not win.

i will say had mailman stayed with jazz still he would have made the highest score by now or probably by next season.

His main aim was to get the coveted "ring". When guys like Toran lee can have a ring why not me?? would have been prompted him for a big pay cut and go for lakers. But his badluck lost in cakewalk finals to pistons.

I would probably think the same way if i were him. you can score if you are healthy irrespective of what team you are in. However you have the chance of getting the "ring" only when you are with some strong team.

CJ Mama:

With due respect to your comments..I actually think he has a better chance to be the scoring champion." RINGS" do not come by easy ..
if they do than the Lakers would have won them in 2003 and 2004. Please understand that it is easy for a
man to do what he has been doing for 20 years( Having 20 , 10 nights) rather than doing something he
is not used to (getting a ring).

He ia great great player day in and day out and he deserves a ring, as I feel he has been cheated by Jordan
at least once on his way to a championship. But destiny and luck always favors the chapionships .. so Jordan
"earned" it.

He is about 1450 (38387 is Kareem's record) and the Mailman has 37,000 ( 36928 precisely) shy and what
he needs is just ONE season of about 15-16 points if he in good health or two season will
definitely cap it, even if he averages 7-8 POINTS per game.

Malone averaged 13.3 ppg when he was injured for 42 games( 2004 lakers)
in the season and 25 for his career. It should be a cakewalk for him.
Now, dont tell me Malone is old and weak and does not have the legs...it is a samll target for a great player.
He will be 43 by then, but remember the Kareem was nearly (44 when he retired).

So you to the math .. the RING is much tougher.

Detriot just made the chamionship as they worked really hard collectively as a
team. They were not supposed to be there, they have not made the playoffs in 12
years and they will not be there in near future again. History has a plethora of
such examples. Lakers on trhe other hand were supposed to be there by definition, but they lost.
You know what I mean .. The LAKERS lost .. Detriot never won... their RINGS were
a consequence of Lakers failure. I think most teams would have beat LA the way they palyed
in the Finals.

I could discuss at length on this topic...but form home not from work.

Singh.

at this age and stage i dont think mailman can become the No1 scorer. So his first option would be to for the "ring". He cant make it with LA (ofcourse no one expected pistons to beat LA which is one of the biggest sports upset in last 25yrs). So for him it makes sense to associate with Shaq (sentimentally every former MVP on his first trade won championship) and try for a "ring".

Cj SOdara:

Thank you very much. But I dont think that will happen. If Horry is a free agent and is available, it would logical for RIley to go for horry.

But if they go for a veteran and star-power and Moalone is genuinely interested than ..good for the Lakers again.

Horry is a proven power Forward and good for teh Lakers. They could try to get him by offloading a few players.

IIMO, this is what is going ot happen ..HORRY to Heat and Malone stays in LaLaland. LaLand is the most legitimate place he can chase the scoring championship if not the ring.

From what I read, the Mialmn HAS TAKEN a a paycut to accomodate Vlade. Menaing that if he decides to comeback late Summer , he is going to pay for less that the ((less)) he has agreed to last year.

Further, I think he has always said if he palys again it is going to be for the Lakers. DId is appaer in the press that he is considering SOuth Beach.

Vlade signed for lakers for two yrs and is supposed to be the center start. this guy used to be laker hater to the core while he was with Kings

Vlade was a passionate player with the Kings and we LAKER fans hated him to the core. He was definitely angry that the Lakers tarded him becuase he loved Los Angeles. He still(until two months ago) had a home there.

The Kings dropped him uncermoniously in favor of Brad Miller and as NAgRocks Mama ssaid he left to Serbia and his first choice was the Lakers.

Malone going to the HEAT???? News to me.

this guy hated lakers mainly because he was traded for a bachha (kobe at 17). later in 2002 that anger went to heights verbally.

I pity KINGS since in all these deals and trades they are the main losers. lost three consecutive times game 7 and were out.

My choies this coming season

Nag Rocks Mama:

Not really, he i in th prime of his career and is doing pretty good. There are a lot of examoles of over paid players if you want to choose, but Fish is definitely worth the riski.

But as you said , I definitely think they should have spent the money as a future investment. He is verstaile with or without the triangle as he can shoot. At times. given a chance I think that he would be able to create his own shot.

The only problem though is that he is behind Nick Van Exel and andother gaurd and is the third option. Mike Dunleavy is a forward playing guard there. But let us wish him the best. He did a lot for LA.

No letting S Fish go would have cost the Lakers about $0 million, but if that is what is necessary.. I personally think they should have gone for it.

The GLove is going to be done next year and we will have to be on the lookout again, else Kobe has to play point.

the otherday i read a column where it said is kobe worth that much for buss to throw away phil and shaq??

right now lakers r kinda rebuilding the team centering around Kobe.

So now i got two teams sorry three to support

Lakers
Heat
Spurs

there were some rumours that kobe might goto spurs and that would have been a guaranteed championship with the lethal combo of TD and KB. I wish that was a reality.

Saar:

The thing is any game is a Team game not a one man show. If you want the ball to shoot 50 times a game, well you know what's happening with Iverson. Big Daddy understands the team concept better than Kobe

This statement is very true. In Tex WInters triangle the center was the focal point, so even Luc Longley looked good. But Shaw is MDE( Most dominant Ever).

I support the Lakers and it gloried Franchise, I like Shaq as a player, but right now it is not about him or Kobe.

It is about the Lakers.

OTOH, there might new gaurds as versatile as Kobe or some of them might develop into some, but there is one factor that distuinguishes Kobe/Jordan (FEARLESNESS).

For the records, AI in his entire career dating back to Higschool in In DC Metro area and while under Thomspon in Gerogetown and when with Larry Brown has never taken a game winning shot!!!!
I wonder if Tracy or his cousing Vince have done that. Webber WHO??????

MJ DA maan. Kobe is an immediate next in the current era, when it comes to fearlessness and clutch time performaces. Like it or not.

Bignole Saar:

Everybody loves Big Daddy. He is unique phenomenal and right now angey. In an interview on local radio he said he had to leave becuase they fired the Zen Master. "Fired" in the sense that no one was contacted and he was having breakfast with Shauni and Taahirah when he saw it on TV. That was his last straw.

As I said, I think for Mitch and Buss it was all about who could bring in more tcikets to make the franchise live. I am pretty sure Jeanie,Magic and for that matter Kobe had anything to do with it.

Kobe looks like a Laker for life. The Glove is the point for atleast an year. Lamar and Butler are proven scores. Horace might stick on for an year after the injury. No 4 spot is good with enough backup even if Malone is the starter. Derek needs to come back and share with the Glove.

The perennial problem that the Lakers always had was the backup center, handles by Stanislav Medvdenko. I do not thatink Stan and Brian can handle the monsters of the west.

But Jordan did it with Luc Longley and I think Brian is atleast as good. It is going to be a season to watch.

As for Shaq, he will always be the guy. The Lakers have undoubtedly misbehaved with him and disprepected him.( if even if Shaq wanted more money, Who doesnt, Kobe had 36 million reason to stay back.).

I really wish he does well in Miami, but Dwayne Wade is no Kobe and for that matter Ediie Jones in the most consistent scorer in Miami. He played for Kurt Rambis while he was Shaqs teamate earlier.

Shaq is the best. I hope he is back with his best and does well in South beach.

Nag-Rocks Mama:

Well said.

It is all about the money. I f not the only factor it was a defintely a motivating factor in the whole deal. Loyalty has no place in cureent day franchise sports.

1) Jerry Buss got rid of SHaq as he though Kobe was wroth more money in tickets.

2) Shaq went to Miami as he could negotiate a better extension as he opined there was less money in LA land.

3} Kobe stayed in LA as he was getting more money ( 36 million) than the nearest competitor, both figuratively and geographically.

4) Donald Sterling runs that franchis as a perfect business, " do not invest more money than you THINK you can earn".

Gaali:

Ante yee yr kooda Lakers ki support cheyyalenu. Yeppudu vadultaado yee sani gaadu.

Gaali Mama:

The game is greater than a team which is greater than an individual mama. Respect and like them in that order and hate them in the reverse order. Nothing worng in hating a person(Kobe) in your case, but I dont understand why that would stop you to be an anti-Laker.

I hope you understand what I mean.

I was prepared to root for the Lakers even if D George was the first scoring option and the Glove at the point and aging Grant brothers(Brian/Horace) and 1 and 4.

But now that K has shunned the cross town Clippers
it is just nice.

Wish Shaq all the best in his career and Gob Bless the lakers. Shaq has conributed as much as any othe Laker has ever to LaLand.

Go Lakers!!!!!

Singh.
