‘Ashok’ Review: Action Blended With Sounds and Special Effects Film : ASHOK Rating : 3.25/5 Banner : Maharshi Cinema Casting : NTR, Sameera Reddy, Sonu Sood, Prakash Raj, Venumadhav, Vadivukkarasi, Ravi Kale, Sudha, Jahnavi, Jeeva, Raghubabu and others Music : Manisharma Story : Vakkantham Vamsy Dialogues : Marudhuri Raja Cinematography : K K Senthil Kumar Action : Stun Shiva Art : Ashok Camera : Senthil Kumar Editing : Gowtham Raju Produced by : Valluripalli Ramesh Screenplay and directed by : Surendar Reddy Theatrical Release : 13th July 2006 Story Ashok (NTR) bears a temperament of less patience and more emotion. He indulges in several disputes and ends up with fighting and rivalry. His father (Prakash Raj) warns him for the same and tries to prevent his son from getting into such disputes. KK (Sonu Sood) is the local leader and gangster, who is cruel and brutal. Ashok accidentally encounters with KK’s brother and fights with him in an incident. Thus the rivalry starts between KK and Ashok. KK targets Ashok’s family and his lady love, Anjali (Sameera Reddy) to take his revenge and fulfill his desire by marrying Anjali. Rest of the story is how Ashok tackles KK and his group single handedly. The film comes to an end amidst a mammoth climax action scene. Performances NTR: The film mainly runs to maintain the elevated image of NTR as action hero. He is really good in performing dances and a few steps steal the show. He is balanced in tempo while performing the sentiment and action. A couple of sentiment scenes worked out well on him on screen. Sameera Reddy: There is no big role to play for Sameera than pairing up with the hero. She looked good in a few frames. Costumes on Sameera appear to be average. Sonu Sood: He really deserves a mention and the introduction of his cruelty is really gruesome. He looked cruel through out. Prakash Raj: He is adequate in his role as the father of the hero. He sounds dignified and balanced as per characterization. Others: Raghu Babu, Sudha, Venu Madhav, Rajeev Kanakala, Jeeva and Vadivukkarasi have performed in tune with the requirement. Thumbs up Aspects: Opening Shot Special Effects NTR’s dances Music Cinematography Editing Thumbs down Aspects: Heroine and her costumes Lack of Comedy Analysis: The film is based on more brawn and less brain. Hero appears strong and sturdy and answers any number of attacks merely with his muscle. First half of the film is up to the mark but second half turned a bit wearisome. Climax of the film closes with customized action scene and no twists are worked out. Heroine may affect the collections in B and C centers. Story and dialogues are neither minus nor plus for the film. The film has to be rated with relative property. It is better than the recent flicks of NTR. The film can be watched for technical values but nothing more. Mani Sharma’s music stands as one of the highlights of the film. Music helped a lot to boost up the range of action scenes. Senthil Kumar’s camera work is the heart of this film. The effort to record some specific frames with extra attention is clearly visible on screen. Although the story is routine, the manner of handling it worked well with Surender. He spelled his talent with good screenplay using visual effects wherever necessary. But his output is still a bit lesser than the expectations. Emotion and action elements spilled on NTR are similar to that of his previous films. The film stands to elevate the established action hero image NTR. The film has to allure the B and C centers and repeated audiences.
