A strategic plan for US Soccer president Sunil Gulati By Raj Purohit - July 16, 2006 Raj Purohit submits a strategic development plan to US Soccer Federation president Sunil Gulati. Memorandum To: Sunil Gulati, President U.S. Soccer Federation From: Raj Purohit, GlobalFutbol.com RE: Strategic Plan to Support Team USA Mr. Gulati, The first four months of your Presidential term unfortunately saw Team USA crash out of the 2006 World Cup in disappointing fashion. Thankfully no reasonable individual would hold you accountable for either the defeats or performances of the side in Germany. However, the fans - your constituency - are looking to you for leadership and a clear plan to ensure a much more successful performance from Team USA at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. This memorandum is designed to start a conversation re: the core elements of that plan and to encourage other voices to offer their ideas. We all have a stake in a successful Team USA performance in 2010; and I hope that you find these suggestions constructive and somewhat useful. Coaching Structure: At Global Futbol we have noted over recent weeks that the replacement of current National Team coach Bruce Arena must be done in a respectful yet expedient manner. Our belief is that he should be offered the opportunity to shift his role to one focused primarily on the growth and development of the youth teams, leaving coaching of the national side to a new appointee. Our first choice for that appointment is German National Team coach Jurgen Klinsmann. We have supported his appointment for many weeks but recognize that there are certain obstacles that must be overcome - most significantly his desire to spend several months recovering from recent World Cup. We believe that U.S. Soccer should take the decision to wait a few months before approaching Mr. Klinsmann. While this is not a perfect situation, as there is no guarantee he will accept the post, the long-term benefits of getting the right person in the job outweigh the short-term considerations. U.S. Soccer should be flexible when it discusses the position with Mr. Klinsmann. His public comments suggest that a significant break between jobs coupled with the offer of a narrowly focused National Team portfolio would increase the chances of securing the appointment. With Mr. Arena in the role of director of youth development and other individuals taking over the outreach responsibilities, Mr. Klinsmann would be able to focus his energies on the 2010 World Cup. We do recognize that there is a real possibility that Mr. Klinsmann will turn down the offer to coach Team USA and that U.S. Soccer would need to consider alternative options. Our suggestion is that U.S. Soccer considers the following individuals for the post: Gerard Houllier (current coach of Olympic Lyon, Champions of French Ligue 1), Martin O'Neil (former coach of Glasgow Celtic), Glenn Hoddle (former England coach), Steve Nicol and Peter Nowak. From this group we would strongly support the appointment of either Mr. Houllier. We believe that his knowledge of the game, communication skills and experience would be well suited to the post. We are happy to provide additional thoughts on these individuals. Increase Competition: At Global Futbol we have discussed various initiatives that would increase the quality of the National Team. With the exception of a transformational coach, the consensus view is that Team USA must face high quality opposition, ideally in competition situations, as regularly as possible. Therefore we urge you to do whatever is necessary to ensure that the United States competes in the Copa America tournament on a regular basis. Some critics suggest that this will overburden the National Team due to its Gold Cup commitments. We respectfully disagree; the U.S. should enter a mixed team of young prospects (16-21 age group) and a couple of senior players in the Gold Cup and take the full team to the Copa America. A second opportunity for high-level competition is during the summer tours by top European teams. A Team USA Select XI (comprised of the best home based U.S. team players) should compete in a game against one of the top touring sides. A match next summer between a Team USA Select XI and Barcelona or Chelsea would be very useful. Freddy Adu: It is unusual to focus on one specific player in such a memorandum but at Global Futbol we strongly believe that U.S. Soccer will be much stronger with this young player in the squad. Recent media attention has surrounded comments made by Freddy and others pertaining to his eligibility for Ghana. This must be dealt with rationally and effectively. We believe that a meeting with Freddy Adu, his family and representatives should occur this summer. U.S. Soccer should make clear that the next national team coach will be prioritizing the mainstreaming of Adu into the Team USA structure and that the leadership recognizes that he is a key part of the planning for South Africa 2010. This is not, as some would argue, indulging a young player, it is recognizing that a lot has been asked of him at a young age and at times a player with his inexperience simply requires positive re-enforcement as to his role in a broader initiative. There are additional changes needed to support the National Team and soccer in general in the United States and we see this memo as the start of a discussion. We hope that it is useful and look forward to engaging on the challenges and opportunities facing U.S. soccer in the months ahead. ?
