July 1947. India was just a month away from attaining freedom from the British. It was then that two men, who had participated in the freedom struggle, decided to prepare the young generation for an India that would soon be free.
They were the legendary filmmakers B. Nagi Reddi and his friend Chakrapani. Nagi Reddi became the publisher of a magazine called Chandamama that was to be edited by his dear friend, Chakrapani.
"If you look at the first edition that came out in July 1947, you will see that their intention was to familiarise the post-Independence generation with Indian tradition, folklore, mythology and history in the form of stories," remembers B. Viswanatha Reddi, Nagi Reddi's son and the current editor and publisher of Chandamama. He was just three years old when the first copy came out.
Viswanatha Reddi was made the publisher of Chandamama in 1965 by his father. And, from 1975 onwards, for the last three decades, he has also been the editor.

Chandamama first appeared in Telugu and Tamil languages, with a print order of 6,000 copies. In 1948, it appeared in Kannada, and in Hindi in 1949. In 1978, Chandamama was already being published in 14 languages when a new Sinhala edition was added. It started appearing Sanskrit in 1984.
Chandamama started a Santhali edition in 2004. It became the first children's magazine to be published in a tribal language.
In 2003, Reddi decided to add a Junior Chandamama to the long list of editions of the original.
Braille editions of the magazine are now available in Telugu, English and Hindi.
Today, all the languages put together, 200,000 copies of Chandamama are being sold every month. This is a remarkable feat because they do not spend a single paisa on advertising. But Reddi believes they can easily sell 600,000 to 700,000 copies a month, and they are looking at opportunities to tap such a huge market.
Recently, the Infosys Foundation has come forward to buy and distribute 6,000 copies of the Kannada and English editions of Chandamama to the rural children of Karnataka.

Viswanatha Reddi remembers that it was a tough task for him to step into his father's shoes as the publisher of Chandamama in 1965. Whenever he felt there should be a change in the content of the magazine in tune with the generational changes, he used to have discussions with his father and with Chakrapani.
"They had a framework in their mind, and my father never let us go outside it. He was very strict about that. According to him, it should be profusely and pleasantly illustrated... that is, every page in Chandamama had to have an illustration. Content-wise, he wanted us to adhere to the old folktales and traditions with a stress on the villages. They believed in what Mahatma Gandhi said: 'India lives in its villages.' The motto of the founders was that Chandamama should depict the Indian way of life," says Reddi.
What was the biggest challenge Viswanathan Reddi faced as a publisher and the editor of a 60-year old magazine?
"I have to face this question periodically because tastes of children change from time to time. When things do not look good, agents and marketing people ask me to make Chandamama modern, but I am obliged to follow the vision of my father and Mr. Chakrapani."
How did he withstand the pressure from the agents and marketing people? "When I don't have a conflict within me, I have no problem withstanding the pressure," he replied.
Though Reddi has made the English edition quite modern to suit the English-reading young urban children, the language editions strictly stick to the old format. "In 2002, we de-linked the English Chandamama from the other editions."
Junior Chandamama was started in English in 2003 to answer certain queries from children below the age of nine. The first issue was received by President A P JAbdul Kalam.

Even after 60 years of existence, Chandamama has not exhausted the rich bag of folktales and mythological stories that India has, Reddi says. Now that a third generation of readers has come up for Chandamama, they have started repeating some of the very popular stories for the young.
"Actually the demand to repeat our old stories comes from the first generation readers. They ask us to repeat some of the stories they had read as they were growing up. Some of the adventure stories we carry are as good as the Harry Potter series. The only difference is that Harry Potter is more contemporary. The author has mixed the new and the old. But Chandamama still adheres to the old."
Having been the publisher of Chandamama for the last four decades, Viswanatha Reddi says he has become a part of Chandamama rather than Chandamama becoming a part of him. "I reflect the philosophy of Chandamama and it has become a part and parcel of my system."
So, suspending the publishing of Chandamama in 1998 due to labour problems was the most painful decision for him. And restarting it after a year, the most memorable.

"Chandamama is my father's first child. He was sick and paralysed when we suspended Chandamama, and we knew it hurt him badly. Of course, we took his permission before doing that. But I gave him a word that we would soon revive it. After we revived it in December 1999, I gave the first copy of all the 12 language editions to him as a birthday gift, and he received them with tears in his eyes. I can never forget that moment in life. He was my mentor and my hero, and I had to hurt him for a while, but later I managed to bring tears of happiness to his eyes."
Reddi says he was also grateful to his good friends, Vinod Sethi of (Morgan Stanley) and Sudhir Rao (then of Karvy Consultants) who helped him revive the magazine.
Vinod Sethi is responsible for Morgan Stanley picking up a stake in Chandamama India Limited, the new company floated to re-launch the magazine.

There is a general belief that the reading habits of children have dwindled today, and that kids prefer TV to books. But Reddi refutes this belief.
"Children preferring TV to books is not a new phenomenon. It comes and goes. First, when television made its appearance in India, contrary to the general belief, our circulation increased. That was because Doordarshan was airing serials based on Ramayan and Mahabharat. Then, when the satellite channels came, our circulation dropped. But today, you take the case of the Harry Potter series. Children are hooked to books. Each child has his likes and dislikes, and there are responsible parents who allow only specific hours for television viewing. So, television has never been a threat to books."
But he admits that the Internet is a threat. "I do not know how much Internet will affect the print medium. That is why we are trying to modernise and expand our activities. Chandamama cannot remain static. We have completed 60 years and it is time to look at the new world, and new possibilities."
The good news is that the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam is digitising old copies of Chandamama, recognising the magazine as a part of India's heritage. Reddi also has plans to start an interactive Chandamama on Internet and also move on to multimedia.

While Reddi is looking for partners to expand and modernise Chandamama, there are many people and companies who are evincing interest in the rich content that Chandamama has created over the last sixty years. Reddi says the interest in their content is not a new phenomenon.
"This has been there for a long time. One of the executives of Disney has openly admitted that they wanted to Indianise their television channels. Like Disney, many others are also looking for Indian content. We are discussing with many people including Disney. I don't deny that."
Reddi admitted that Chandamama is looking for a partner with whom they can vibe well because the magazine "has turned the corner and is ready to expand."
"The partnership has to be a good combination; people with the same values. One of the reasons why we are discussing with Disney is because our philosophies like family values and human values are almost identical. Our contents are bereft of violence, and our characters use a language that is full of love and affection. Our aim is to inculcate among the children the Indian philosophy. That is why Chandamama was able to survive 60 years!"
The partnership Chandamama is looking for is one that would be mutually beneficial; Chandamama wants grow and expand through the partnership while providing content to the partner.
In the case of Disney, Chandamama published Disney comics in the eighties, and also franchised and merchandised their products. One of the companies from Chandamama looked after Disney's interests in India.

The advent of new-age comics has never affected the faithful readers of Chandamama, Reddi says, and that is because with every new comic appearing in the market, the creative writer and publisher in Viswanatha Reddi "gets activated."
"Competition inspires us to try our best. That is the only way you can counter any challenge. Today's comics are out and out violent, still we managed to survive by carrying stories that have good human values. Like us, Disney comics also continues with fun comics where the fight is between the good and the evil."
The most memorable response he received was from a reader who called the Chandamama office to say that he was stopping the subscription of Chandamama. "He called to apologise. Then, I asked him, are you unhappy with Chandamama? He said, I am 85 years old and my eyesight is failing, and my doctors have advised me not to read. He then told me that he is sad that something that was a part of him was going away."
What surprised Reddi even more was that the gentleman, a Christian, disclosed that he used to read the Sanskrit Chandamama.
Chandamama has enthralled children and adults alike for the last sixty years as being a part of their growing up years, and it may continue to do so for years to come too.
"Chandamama was not a business but a vision. It is not a lifeless monthly magazine. It is a constant companion," says Reddi.
