Vasoolraja is not a patch on Munnabhai

Vasool Raja MBBS Starring Kamal Haasan, Sneha, Prakash Raj, Nagesh, Rohini Hattangadi Directed by Saran Rating: **
This isn't the first comedy featuring the amazing Kamal Haasan , nor is it the blast. Come to think of it , this isn't even one of his funniest comedies. It could have been a laugh riot, if only the director had stopped looking anxiously over his shoulder at the original film.
Raj Kumar Hirani's Munnabhai MBBS worked because Hirani, revealing an astonishing creative aptitude for a debutant, didn't look towards Tom Shadyac's Patch Adams from which the core of Munnabhai originated.
By the time Munnabhai was ready to go rolickingly regional , provincial corruptions became inevitable. The Mumbaiyya colloquialisms lose much of their relevance and appetite for the repartee on the way to Chennai.
Munnabhai, rechristened Rajaraman in its Tamil avatar is an 'innocuous extortionist'. And if that sounds like a contradiction in terms then you haven't seem Munnabhai and would therefore enjoy the remake far more than those who come to the Tamil version via the Hindi original.
Not only does Vasool Raja replicate a majority of the specific situations from the original, it also seems to have invited some of the original cast members to join in. Yatin Karyekar who played Munnabhai's comatose compatriot in the hospital returns to the role in Tamil.
One hopes and prays Karyekar isn't roped in for the same part in the Telugu version as well. He just might end up making a fashion statement out of immobility.
Rohini Hattangadi who played Sanjay Dutt's warm and calmly emotional mother returns to her original role. Here she's surprisingly stoic, almost expressionless. Perhaps she senses the let's-get-it-done-with mood of this cannibalistic endeavour better than the rest the cast who try to be funny sassy and prankish. Barring Kamal Haasan, no one really gets laugh-way there.
The frail actor Nagesh who plays the protagonist's father cannot hope to equal the emotional velocity of Sunil Dutt's real-life rapport with son Sanjay as extended into the film.
Whether it is with his screen -parents, his sweetheart (Sneha, as vapid as Gracy Singh in Munnabhai ) or with his right-hand man Vaddi(Prabhu), Kamal Haasan seems to function in a vibrating vacuum. He invests his role with characteristic energy. But is completely let down by his surroundings including the supporting cast who seem to be secretly sniggering at the attempt to recreate the Munnabhai magic rather than the situations on-hand.
But magic, like love, just happens. The attempt to encore laughter from the same joke is as futile as trying to put toothpaste back into a tube.
Take Prakash Raj as the dean of the hospital where Rajaraman, nee Munnabhai, fidges his way into medical classes. Not only is the actor enamoured of the Kamal Haasan school of acting he must also spend his entire on-screen time trying to emulate Boman Irani who played the role in the original.
With echoes zigzagging across the creaking frames like welters left behind by an invisible though distinctly wacky whip, Vasool Raja seems to be left with no alternative but to turn Munnabhai into a formulistic slapstick. Director Saran laces the original with liberal doses of what we could call brainwaves(for the want of a better description).
Two romantic duets filmed in an Alipne environ come with a strained suddenness breaking the impact of the humorous situations , reminding us what Munnabhai would have been like had its producer-director team hadn't stuck its neck out into a territory that was at once familiar and strange.
In Vasool Raja, the makers turn up the dialogue decibels by many notches. The humour is re-designed with inaudible canned laughter to support the material. But laughter without a lingering sense of nostalgia , is certainly not the best medicine. Vasool Raja relies almost entirely on Kamal Haasan's charisma to see it through. Gone is the glorious giggles of original. What we get instead are ladles of subverted attitude that supports neither the film's basic love-heals-all premise nor the back-to-school performance of the protagonist.
And worse of all, what happened to Munnabhai's hilarious right-hand man Circuit? He seems to be all but lost in translation!
Arshad Warsi must be amused.
Now a Telugu version of Munnabhai is on the way. Lest we forget., Chiranjeevi who plays the title role isn't half the actor that Kamal Haasan is.
