Real Reasons for postponement of releases of the 3 ARR biggies...

Sunita, wife of filmmaker Ashutosh Gowarikar and executive producer of Swades, also admits that given its title and the fact that a certain crucial event in the film is related to Independence day jubilation, packaging it as an August 15 release would have made Swades special. “We were pushing for the date but hadn’t fixed on it,” avers Gowarikar. Shooting is over but post-production has taken a while with some special effects needing to be incorporated. In the bargain the red-letter day has slipped by and Swades is now looking to a November-December release.

Post-production delays have also pushed back two extravagantly mounted bio-pics, the Ketan Mehta directed The Rising and Shyam Benegal’s Bose-The Forgotten Hero. Mehta had targeted for an August 15 release. But halfway through the year, it became evident that they were not going to make it. Shooting has been wrapped up but even Aamir Khan has been instructed not to shave of his flourishing moustache till November when editing, dubbing and re-shooting, if any, will be completed to the meticulous director’s satisfaction.

Not wanting to clash with other biggies by coming in the closing months of the year, the film’s producer, Bobby Bedi has prudently decided to open early in the new year. “We’re now talking of a Republic Day release. Given its subject, January 26 would be as appropriate a date as August 15. The film has to be ready first and then the pros and cons of coming with the exams, have to be carefully weighed. We’ll take a call on the release day later in the year,” asserts Bedi.

Bose—The Forgotten Hero is an emotional commitment on the part of Sahara India Pariwar to recreate Netaji’s efforts to bring together his countrymen, irrespective of religion, caste and culture, to liberate India from opressive foreign rule. Given its definitive slant, both Benegal and his lead actor Sachin Khedekar admit that an Independence Day opening would have benefited their Forgotten Hero. However, two years of extensive research, followed by another two years of reliving history with a huge contingent of Indian and international actors and technicians, has deferred the release by at least 8-10 weeks.

A lot of effort has gone into making the project authentic. As many as 18 rough drafts were made on the way to the final script and Benegal’s attempts to trace Netaji’s footsteps from his dramatic flight from Kolkata in 1940 to his unexplained disappearance five years later, has taken him to four other countries besides parts of India. The film has been shot in Germany, Uzbekistan, England and Myanmar (Burma) on actual locations. “Being a period film it took its own time, both in shooting nad post-production,” rued Benegal, as he watched his circled date whiz past.
