HYDERABAD : This is the third time that Yeduguri Sandinti Rajasekhara Reddy, popular as YS in the Andhra Pradesh Congress, is within sniffing distance of power.
Exit polls have forecast a sweeping verdict for his party, but the near-miss he had with power on two earlier occasions will play on his mind as he tries to control the enthusiasm of his party.
In 1999, he all but declared himself winner in the runup to polls. But the Kargil factor stood between him and power. In 1994, after a campaign of dissidence, the high command decided to change its chief minister here, N Janardhan Reddy.
YS assumed he'd be anointed CM and called his family for the swearing-in. At the last minute, the post went to Kotla Vijayabhaskar Reddy.
Notwithstanding the strike outs in a millennium gone by, in his own way, YS is confident of pulling the rug from under CM Chandrababu Naidu this time. YS took out a padayatra in the summer of 2003, which many say has been a crucial factor in his favour in this election.
Political pundits say this helped him and Congress gain lost ground. His easy accessibility and friendliness during the yatra helped him score a point over arch-rival Naidu, who couldn't mingle with people after security was beefed up following the Tirupati blasts last year. YS is top contender for the CM's job should Congress come to power.
This will fulfil the political ambitions that YS has nurtured since his college-going days. He was the president of the students union of M R Medical College, Gulbarga and president of the house surgeons' union at S V Medical College, Tirupati.
After a brief stint as a medical officer at the Church of South India Campbell Hospital, Jammalamadugu, under the guidance of an aunt and setting up a 70-bed hospital at Pulivendula, his constituency, YS turned to full-time politics.
His political mentor was his father Y S Raja Reddy, a major political figure in Kadapa district. He was also deeply influenced by Indira Gandhi during her "socialist" phase.
Her garibi hatao slogan, nationalisation of banks and cancellation of privy purses impressed him. His first electoral experience was in 1978, at the age of 28.
Contesting assembly polls from Pulivendula, he trounced a Janata Party rival by 20,000 votes. There's been no looking back since.
YS's political identity in state politics is of a perpetual dissident. His strongest political acts till the last year's scorching padayatra was a hunger strike at the MLAs' hostel in August 2000, when the agitation against power tariff hikes was peaking.
But he called off the strike when he had the Naidu government on the ropes, an act which earned him a lot of criticism and ridicule as a closet friend of Naidu. Calling off that strike was just one of YS's several controversial acts.
He withdrew a corruption case against Naidu in the High Court in 2000 and took part in a dharna to protest the naxalite attack on the CM.
YS likes to spend his spare time reading. His favourite book is Mario Puzo's Godfather, but he also likes reading biographies. Rajasekhara Reddy comes from a family that straddles Christianity and Hinduism, common among Rayalaseema Reddys.
YS's grandfather moved to Pulivendula in 1933 and bought 120 acres of land there. They moved there because of opposition to religious conversion in their village.
The Protestant family never missed Sunday service, but YS's politics eat into his personal time. He's not given to religiosity.
In contrast with Naidu, the affable doctor is a creature of the heart rather than the mind. He's an astute speaker in the Telugu idiom and shuns Powerpoint presentations.
Politics, he says, isn't everything. With results not due out until May 11, he's headed towards cool Coonoor for a holiday.
Come results on May 11, he'll come under pressure again. If Congress wins, he's likely to get the CM's seat. If Congress loses, he's committed to political sanyas. In that unlikely scenario, he'll still be remembered in AP's political history for his great last stand. |
