Comming back to topic, i do say when there is not that level of market for telugu movies compared to bollywood, i should say that producers fighting for piracy control should limit their budget.....as it has direct/indirect effect on exhibitors and distributors who have important role in industry business...as long as they r happy.....industry would be happy..... i also suggest the exhibitors and distributors to control making decisions based on craze and go with what is real.....its better for them to go on profit sharing deals rather than outright way...so that producer will also enjoy the profits....or else exhibitor/distributor need not take the whole liability for the loss ventures. |

Good thread for a change. I am neither a producer nor releated to movie business in any manner whatsoever. But still, as an average moviegoer, I dread to think about the damages piracy can do to the industry (and to the state cofers), if the Government does not take solid measures to stop it. Having said that, let me tell you the way I look at some of the questions raised by the author. My Ans to Q1: I guess all business students here will be familiar with a pricing principle called "charging what the traffic can bear". Many corporations including those that run by the state(read govt) follow this. Eg. The public transportation system charges differential fares to the public for utilizing its services at different points in time(peak/off peak). IF GOVT. RUN COMPANIES CAN CHARGE DIFFFERENT PRICES FOR ABSOLUTE ESSENTIALS LIKE WATER, ELECTRICITY, THEN I SEE NO REASON WHY OWNERS OF CINEMA HALLS SHOULD REFRAIN FROM DOING THAT (AS LONG AS THEY PAY TAXES) ESPECIALLY NOW THAT THE BUSINESS HAS BEEN GRANTED A FULL TIME INDUSTRY STATUS. Moreover, cinema is not a necessity. It's just a comfort (as I said earlier). Hence, it presents high chances for deferred consumption i.e. people can certainly wait till the ticket prices come back to normalcy. Ans to Q2. Again, "TO DO OR NOT TO DO IS THE QUESTION"! Theater owners like all other business owners have a right to do things that will maximize their profits. But the onus is fairly on the customers to put an end to these (evil) practices. Now, we have reached a point where a major release is screened in more than two cinemas on average at any place. Try to utilize the latest breakthroughs in the business like e-ticketing, advance booking etc. Go to other theaters where the movie is screened. If all these things fail, stop budging to the black ticket vendors. Come back and watch it. But indulging in piracy is no way to show your dissent as two wrongs seldom become one right. Ans TO Q3. MAN, THIS IS SCARY. Granted, producers should be made responsible for the content they produce. It is also their duty to provide value to the audience money. But, entertainment industry is a pretty nasty business to be in as it involves itself in dealing with abstract/meta-physical concepts, for which there are no objective measures. What is entertainment for you may not necessarily be true for me. For some Shankarabharanam may be the ultimate movie...for lots of others Agniparvatham/Adaviramudu will be the definition of entertainment. With so much ambiguity in the definition of entertainment, it is a tall order to expect producers to satiate the interests of all viewers. Here is a practical analogy: suppose you go to a restaurant and order food. What do you do if the food is not good? Do you sue him? Certainly not. I will either try out something new there or at the most stop patronizing the restaurant. In the same way, it is better to trust our own instincts before investing "50 rupees" on a movie. For the less adventerous, they can always rely on the word of mouth of their kith and kin. Doing so, will reduce the need of suing producers in the court of law. Why take hard measures for some soft problems? Foot note : By answering these, I don't want to pretend holier than thou. I have indulged in piracy when I came to the U.S. first as that was the only way for me to get a glimpse of the latest movies. But a couple of ads, aired by the hollywood producers guild, featuring the technicians who were adversely impacted by the problem, made me to see the big picture and then I told myself....heck, this is one temptation which I can resist!! After all, that's how one evolves as a person. KILL PIRACY SAVE THE INDUSTRY!! Hanuman/Jamadagni www.princefans.us

Questions on Piracy to the producers A good article from Telugucinema.com I am writing this in the wake of the recent incidents happened in the Telugu film industry. During the recent 'vijaya yathra' of a film, the film hero was happened to attack a CD Shop in Warangal and subsequently police had filed case on the charges of attacking the shop and kidnapping the shop owner. The reason behind this was, the shop was selling/renting the pirated VCDs of the movie. Then some bigwigs of the industry met the CM of AP and appealed to take stern action against the movie piracy because industry is losing crores of rupees with piracy VCDs. Also one top producer makes statement that if the piracy continues he will stop making movies. I am not running any VCD shop or I am not supporting the piracy. I am an ordinary moviegoer, who used to watch all kinds of movies since my childhood. Why don’t we look at the other side of the piracy also? Now everybody is talking of stop piracy. Stop piracy. But no one is thinking about why piracy has become money minting business and why people prefer watching movies at home instead of going to theater. Now nobody is interested to go and watch a movie in theatre by spending 50-100/- per ticket. Instead they will rent a CD for 20/- and entire family can watch the movie sitting at home. I would like to put few questions to these industry bigwigs who are talking about piracy or so-called fans of heroes. 1. Whenever a top hero movie releases, many theaters will hike the ticket overnight. Sometimes the ticket is priced more than 100/- irrespective of the class (regular price 30/-). Can an ordinary person come and watch the movie by spending 400-500 for his family? Why nobody is talking about this? Why dont fans object to this? Instead they feel proud about it 2. In first few weeks, most of the theaters will engage their own people to sell tickets in block. Why the fans are silent? 3. In many theaters. In canteen all the items are sold at very higher price than the marked price. Why nobody takes any action on this? 4. How many theaters in the state have proper hygiene conditions with proper seating arrangement? 5. How many theaters in the state follow optimal level of sound system? Most the theaters have unbearable sound pollution on the name of DTS. 6. How many theaters in the state will put on the AC from censor card to subham card? On the other side, if you look at the quality of the movies being produced, 1. How many movies are being produced really worth to go and watch in the theater with entire family? Most of the movies are 'imported' from other languages or with excess violence in the name of faction or cheap vulgar comedy in the name of youth movies. 2. All these people will be shuttling between Hyderabad and Chennai. As soon as the coconut breaks on muhurat day of a Tamil movie, Telugu producers (some times heroes also) are ready to pour crores of rupees without looking at the story or suitability for Telugu nativity. Why is this happening? Is Telugu industry lack of creative storywriters? 3. If you see the movies of K.Vishwanath, Jandhyala, Vamsee, or Bapu they never tried to remake movies..(May be Bapu would have remade few movies). But you can clearly see the mark of these directors in their movies with Telugu nativity and Telugu culture. 'Sankarabharanam' was not a re-make, 'Sithara' was not a re-make, and ‘Pelli pushtakam' was not a re-make. If you buy a product for 50/- and if the product is sub-standard or poor quality, you can approach consumers forum and you can pull the manufacturer to court in India. Even you can sue the doctor also for the paid services if the quality is not good. If the audience comes out with headache after watching the movie by paying 100/- towards the ticket, why not they sue the producer/director of the movie. Recently one top producer given statement that he will stop making movies if the piracy is not controlled. Let him stop making the movies. Who is going to bother? I am not supporting the piracy. This is definitely illegal and stern action need to be taken. But at the same time we need to think about from other dimensions also
