Young brides are being offered for sale to foreigners in the bazaar of Hyderabad's old city for as a little as $500, according to media reports. The Times of India yesterday reported that marriage brokers last month offered 13 young girls for “marriage” to four Arab men, all aged above 50. One of the grooms, a 55-year-old man from the Gulf, reportedly chose a 16-year-old girl - Shameem - and married her on July 15 and left the country two weeks later after pronouncing he was divorcing her. The marriage was reportedly facilitated by Mumtaz Begum of Falaknuma with help from four brokers. Police spokesman Sandeep Sandilya told the Times: “The brides were paraded…in a broker’s house at Kalapathar and the nikah (wedding) was solemnised by a qadi [a judge from the religious court] at his residence in Shalibanda.'' Sandilya said the man had paid 20,000 rupees ($460) to the brokers for the marriage, out of which the girl's parents were given 10,000 rupees. After Shameen went to the police Mumtaz Begum was arrested but the brokers and qadi were still “at large”. The police reportedly recovered three sworn testimonies claiming Shameem's age as 22 and stating her consent to marry the man. Shameem told police that she had accepted the marriage because the man had promised to take her to the Gulf. “[My husband] took me to a lodge in Chandrayangutta and did not let me out for ten days. When I complained of chest pain, he gave me tablets and sleeping pills. As the pain became unbearable, my mother came to the lodge to take me home where a doctor gave me glucose. [My husband] came to our house the same evening, but I refused to go with him,'' she told the Times. “He came again the next day and forced me to go with him. After four days, I developed similar complications and went back to my house. Within hours, he was at my doorstep threatening to divorce me if did not go with him. When I refused bluntly, he uttered talaq (divorce) thrice and walked away,'' she added. Police are seeking the arrest of the man through Interpol. |
