Domain name is foo.com. Host name is the name of the server that you are talking to e.g. Fred If Fred lives in the domain foo.com, Fred's fully qualified domain name would be Fred.foo.com The www, ftp, pop, mail, abc, 123, BabyYouandMe that are prepended to domain names are usually aliases that point to a specific machines (and ports but lets not clutter the conversion). That way you can change the machine hosting that service easily without upsetting the system. e.g. ftp.foo.com -> Fred www.foo.com -> Wilma pop.foo.com -> BamBam And we decide to replace Wilma with Betty. The user still enters in www.foo.com but instead of going to Wilma they would then go to Betty. User doesn't even know. |

hostname is the name of the server or in other words the node name or the server name in laymen terms. domain name is your domain. oracle.com, us.microsoft.int etc. everyone in that domain can access the server as long as the server is in that domain (DNS entry). |
