NR SOdara: He retired. But he is still on contract with the Pacers until next year. I mean it was optional - in Reggie's could pick it up and play if he wanted to. He would not have got payed if he di not want to. But something interesting happened. No I think DOnnie Walsh asked him to help the Pacers organization - agreeing to play and then get waived. So both of them win. Miller does **NOT** play and gets his 6 Million - and Donnie/Pacers save about 15-20M in taxes. Hope I was clear - Singh |

Amnesty true to its name is a saviour for the owners but - I dont think the players lose anything - a) they are guarnateed their money and b) each of the waived candidates would be atleast 35 by the time they can re-sign. Cannot beleive that Zeke and Dolan dumped the Junkyard Dog instead of Houston. They save 21 M with the "Amnesty" clause and pay 20 M ro Houston - a chronicall hurt Allan is a risk in my opinion. Doug Chirstie waived in Orlando moving to the Maveriks. What the hell let me just complete the list - TOronto - Alonzo Mourning Pacers - Reggie Miller Lakers - Brian Grant Dallas - Michael Finley Knicks - Jerome Williams Orlando - DOug Christie New Jersey Nets - ROn Mercer. Houston - Clarence Watherspoon. Portlant - Nick Van Exel Milwaukee - Calvin Booth. It looks like withe the exception of Booth and Mercer all of them were former all-stars. Singh |

The Los Angeles Lakers waived forward Brian Grant on Wednesday, taking advantage of the amnesty clause, a one-time provision to the NBA's new collective bargaining agreement that allows teams to save nearly $30 million in luxury tax penalties. "The amnesty rule was not in place and thus not a factor when we made the trade which included Brian," said Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak. "However, this is a one-time opportunity to take advantage of this situation, and exercising this will give us greater roster flexibility and the ability to improve our team. We're grateful to Brian for his professionalism and contributions to our team last season and wish him the best of luck with the rest of his career." Grant was part of the July 14, 2004, trade that sent Shaquille O'Neal to the Miami Heat last July. The Lakers acquired Grant, Lamar Odom, Caron Butler and a future first-round draft pick. Grant was the Lakers' second-highest paid player after Kobe Bryant and still is owed $29.8 million on his contract. He averaged a career-low 3.8 points and 3.7 rebounds last season while bothered by chronic tendinitis in his knees. He also had a neck injury in training camp and spent a month on the injured list because of the tendinitis. The Lakers will have to pay nearly all of Grant's remaining contract, even if the 33-year-old player signs with another team as a free agent. The Lakers will gain no additional salary cap flexibility until after the 2006-07 season, when Grant's contract expires. By removing Grant's salary from the NBA's luxury tax calculations, the Lakers benefit because the league assesses a dollar-for-dollar penalty for the amount teams spend over the luxury tax threshold, which will be $61.7 million for next season. ``This is a one-time opportunity to take advantage of this situation, and exercising this will give us greater roster flexibility and the ability to improve our team,'' Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak said. |

The heat resign shaq for 5 years and 100 million dollars. A bargain compared to what i thought he would get. Antoine Walker reportedly will sign with the heat. Shaq and Wade better go look for their shots somewhere else because 'toine ain't giving them the ball. |

I think the key is the team MUST be above the $ for $ tax limit to even qualify for amnesty. I dont think you can do it if there is even 1$ cap-space left - correct me if I am worng. So B GRANT stays - Singh |

OK for people who are interested: Here is the deal - I got rfrom more than a few articles. NBA's new labor deal known as the amnesty clause. This one-time escape hatch lets teams avoid the dollar-for-dollar luxury tax obligation on one contract. The money owed will still count against the salary cap. And the player will still get his guaranteed money -- plus more from whatever team signs him next. Players can't rejoin the team that cuts them until after the existing contract expires. Nothing can happen until the collective bargaining agreement is signed, which is expected by the end of next week. The amnesty opportunity expires once the upcoming season begins. The team can also trade the player. The team must decide whether they're better off cutting the player and collecting the luxury tax savings or dealing him and getting something back, albeit likely players who also have bloated contracts. The quality of the players they're offered and details of their contracts may ultimately make the difference. Singh |

Am I missing something here - I though teams can begin releasing amnesty players as soon as the CBA is ratified, which could be as soon as Friday. So why cannot LA release someone - I am not very sure how they define amnesty - have to do some homwork. Will anyone who is aware of this dropping players and saving money program throw some light. NR Sodara: I agre with NNBK that - Grant might be held for the year. >> trade 2 first rounders they have. I think since we do not have a legitmate center - Phil will try to trade Bynum - given his tendency not to play rookies or somphomores. But on the other hand since he has complete control over the picks in the draft - I guess he has something up his sleeve. I dont think Kupchak can come out and disagree with Phil - remember they booted him initially and then wnt begging. Let us se what happens. Singh |

They can do that only once maama, so they will have to decide as they owe him only 2 years now. In case of Finley and Houston it will be defenetely done. But i think Lakers will pay Grant for this year and may be trade him next year as it will be expiring contract. |

SPITFIRE maama as u said Lakers doesn't have any good tradeble commodities otherthan Caron Butler and they played Gamble with Kwame Brown. May be they didn't get any other good offer. Right now they are a young team if they can move Brian Grant away somehow. They need to play for 2-3 years together to get to next level. If Kobe gets pissed off in the middle then they are screwed. |

NBK Sodara: Well said. Phil is in a totally similar situation in more ways than one. First: A lacklustre team with ONE superstar. (Kobe vs Jordan) Second: Above average supporting star ( Scottie vs Odom) Third: An average center ( Luc Longley vs Kwame/Mihm - Bynum is raw talent here) BUT THERE ENDS THE STORY Disadvantages I will take the Dave Letterman way of top TEN!!!!!) 1)No established role players a.k.a Haper, Horry, Fox. 2) No dependabale rebound man - Dennis the Menace. 3) No JORDAN - Kobe is up and coming - Jordan had fire+talent+killer instinct - Kobe has talent+nothimg else 4) Scottie is a genious - Odom/Grant/Atkins/Grant no way!!!!!!! 5) Tradable commodities are almost zero - in strict NBA sense Lakers have just Kobe and Lamar to trade - STUPID!!!! 6) Vlade+Grant is a mistake beyond repair. 7) Jerry Buss - sending Shaq away was OK - not very good - but he is pardoinable in the revenue sense - but Shaq who shouted during pregames( directly to Jerru Buss) about an extension is going to let -go his 30+ million for a long term offer. What Kupchak had to do was just talk to the kid. 8) RICK FOX is irreplacable - so is letting go of Horry - what all Horry needed was a mid-level exception they wasted on the oft-injured Grant. 9) Luke Walton - was not allowed to play well last season - Brian CooK - where is he??????? 10) PHIL is is here to WIN - Just 50% - the other 50% is SELECT TEXT - his BOSS's daughter - just kidding Singh |

SPITFIRE maama Phil has lot of home work to do. Grant is not a tradeble commodity and he is eating most of the cap. Only players worth on that team will be kobe and lamar. Since they got rid of Atkins they don't have any PG. Looks like Daniels is also gone so they will have to settle with Damon Stoudamire or Dixon or knight and again they will need a backup. Don't know why washington took both Atkins and Daniels. |

NNBK Sodara: I completely agree. PG is a must - Kwame(CF) as center in not agreeable - Mihm/Kwame/Bynum my pick would be no-one. I am unhappy to see what the Lakers have become - no legitimat WC center - we need serious changes. As for the PG situation - taking out Kobe - we have Devean George and Chucky Atkins. With Butler/Atkins gone in the Kwame deal ( they said it would be Atkins or George and settled on Atkins). Devean is good off the bench - so we need to pick one. In the PF poditions Slava/Jumaine/Brian Grant is just OK. Phil has lot of homework to do before the season starts if he wants to compete - th bad thing is be do not have very good stock to trade either - except Lamar and Grant - both of whom we might need. They wasted midlevel exception on him last year. Atleast this year they should get a decent PG with that money. |

For Laker-maniancs (me included) who did not know - "Lakers center Vlade Divac has announced his retirement from the NBA in an exclusive interview with Sportska Centrala, according to NBA.com. Divac, who signed contract extension with the Lakers last summer, underwent back surgery six months ago and played only 15 games last season, averaging just 2.3 points and 2.1 rebounds." Singh |

That Bynum will either pay them or they might have missed another good player in the draft. If that clicks they will get a good center which is very difficult to get. Kwame Brown is an experiment , if it works then they will be in the play offs otherwise it will be like last season. Right now they don't have a PG, don't know who they will get. |

NR Sodara: Phil is going to be throughly tried - he always liked older players and is going to have to make moves to play his Triangle - he has very less time - before Tex Winter dies or retires. The oldest player on the Lakers roster is - guess who - Kobe Bean Bryant with 9 years of Lakertime. Valde (16 years) is immobile and potentially useless for Phil. With new addition Bynum only 17 - youngest player in the NBA - and Odom (6) and Jumaine Jones(6) , Medvedenko (5)are the next most experienced players. Chuky Atkins is gone so Luke, Kwame, Sahsa, And who not have about 3 years tops. This is in my view one of the youngest rosters on any NBA team. I do not know what Dr B and sidekick Kupchak were thinking - seriously - just consider ther age and maturity and lack of depth on this team - this is professional NBA and not some fucked up wandering Harlem Globetrotters team partying in Jayson Williams house Damn Man - It is going to be one FCUK'ing interesting season. if brown takes the job with the knicks he will look bad in everybody's eyes. If public perception matters to him, he should take the year off. |

Sure NR Mama aadadaamu. I am game. I still owe you one - Brown is partly to blame in the Motown medley - but he is definitely a good coach. I hope he just takes off - without going to Gund Arena. Kwame is failure - in the history of Baketball very few people have managed to irritate fans like me - who believe that the player/game is is bigger than an individual team. Yao Ming and Kwame are BIG busts. Yao caanot play for 20 minutes as he gets "tired" - and Browm caanot be even "tried" for 20 minutes. Kwame should paly either for the BobCats or NBDL. Singh |

Din't Kwame say that his great game is being ecllips by non other than His Airness himeself - he had all the time to fly after Jordan was sent packing along with his Haynes underwear. Didn't Dumars say Browm was the best think to happen to Detroit after Ford graced Motown - Didn't Brown say he swaers by the "Cavalier" - that he'd rather contract an illness and retire to a hospital than coach the Lebron " My mome bought me a Hummer \" James. Did not Modley and Steve " By brain is full of Migraine" Frachise - errr Francis - say that they would live and die in Houston. Ofocurse that was until Yao Ming got rid of his interpretor and learnt to say - " Me so tall - mee wants the ball". Didn't Riley say he was "done" - becuase he could not win "one" in forty games a couple of years ago - Van Gundy is history as Riley tries to repeat "his" story. Lakers ger Re-Phil and Pippen - wait for Kwame to say that He is being ecllisped by Pippen - that is if Phils intends to cold the bench - b y playinf this benchwarmer. Singh |
