To be left out after producing 48 and 110 in the two games of the Challenger Trophy and to see Gautam Gambhir (10 and 21) |

A risky path to Vision 2007 Siddhartha Vaidyanathan October 15, 2005 VVS Laxman: left out after producing 48 and 110 in the two games of the Challenger Trophy © Getty Images There are two ways to look at the stance taken by the national selectors while picking the squad for the opening two games against Sri Lanka. One can hail them for backing youth, placing faith in allround ability and focusing on long-term gains. Or one can criticise them for leaving certain players in the lurch, showing too much confidence in untried material and risking immediate losses. Great teams are built on tough decisions and the selectors' moves may play a part in 'Vision 2007', but only time will tell whether this crucial juncture, when the team has just tossed and turned like a paper boat in the Atlantic, was the right moment to take them. One glance through the team sheet, and it's tough to miss the Greg Chappell stamp. The exclusion of Zaheer Khan and VVS Laxman and the general emphasis on multifaceted players provide clear signs. Zaheer's patchy form is surely a concern but, if murmurs are anything to go by, his defiant attitude has probably exacerbated matters. He might well return for some part of the series, especially if a power-laden Sri Lankan batting line-up thrive in the first two games. But sending such clear signals can only make him feel estranged and whether India have enough back-up, in the form of Rudra Pratap Singh and S Sreesanth, to let go of Zaheer, remains to be seen. Laxman's case is even more delicate and it's high time the selectors clarify exactly where he stands as a player in the larger scheme of things. Appointing him the captain of India A in the premier domestic one-day competition was entirely unnecessary if he wasn't even an option. Nobody needs verification of Laxman's ability and considering what a domestic colossus he is, he will invariably score. To be left out after producing 48 and 110 in the two games of the Challenger Trophy and to see Gautam Gambhir (10 and 21) and Suresh Raina preferred, will only confuse him and probably stir up bitterness. Gambhir, an opener, was probably picked as a back-up for Sachin Tendulkar, while Raina's superior ground fielding must have been considered, but Laxman needs to be told his one-day future and not made to feel like an outcast. India aren't a diamond mine of talent yet and the emeralds they have need to be preserved carefully. What India may struggle to preserve, though, over the next few weeks, is their bowling combinations. A pace attack comprising Irfan Pathan, who has just played two ODIs in India, Ajit Agarkar, who can be anything on any day, Rudra Pratap, 19 years and just one ODI-old, Jai Prakash Yadav, restrictive at best, and the raw Sreesanth may have Sanath Jayasuriya and co. smacking their lips in anticipation. Picking a side for just the first two games has its dangers and it's important that players like Sreesanth and Rudra Pratap are given a fair run before a verdict is passed. The selection panel, set to change sometime before November 30, may soon realise that it's fraught with risk to take tough decisions in India. Whether they can weather the storm after a series defeat or two, with a fickle media and public to contend with, and stick to their guns remains to be seen. It's all fine to talk about vision and long-term planning, but nothing hurts like failure and unlike Australia, who in the '80s took defeat after defeat with their chin held up, India might not be able to withstand the body blows that the Sri Lankans, the second-best ODI side, are likely to inflict. And if a certain left-hander returns to the side and starts blazing away, when India are still losing, 'Vision 2007' might just turn slightly blurry. |
