GENDER equality has improved, but blokes still rule the roost, a visiting gender relations expert says. Professor Raewyn Connell, from the University of Sydney, is speaking at a University of Adelaide public lecture tonight. When asked yesterday whether men remained in charge despite years of feminism and fighting for equality, she said the short answer was "yes". "If you look at governments, business, armies, religion, the blokes are still at the top," she said. Professor Connell said theories such as "men are from Mars, women are from Venus" were just "garbage". "There's no question different cultures handle gender relations and gender identities in very different ways," she said. "Relations change and one aspect of that is that a pattern of power that was very widespread 100 years ago of men running every public institution and domestic life they saw fit, that has been challenged. "In many parts of the world, there is no longer a widespread belief that men are more important or better." But Professor Connell said a belief in equality did not necessarily translate to action. She said sexism had become "institutionalised" in Australia because men's access to better jobs with better wages meant it made more sense for women to stay home. The free lecture will run from 5pm to 6.30pm in Napier Lecture Theatre 102, North Terrace Campus, University of Adelaide. మాస్ అంటే ఇష్టం, బెజవాడ అంటే ప్రాణం |
