Rating: ** (***** Very Good, **** Good, *** Fair, ** Average, * Bad) Cast: Pawan Kalyan, Asin, Sandhya, Siva Balaji, Venumadhav, Nagababu, Ashish Vidyarthi, Lal, Brahmanandam, Shakuntala, Kalpana, Hema, Bhargavi and Others. Action: Vijayan. Art: Anand Sai. Cinematography: Sree Ram. Dialogues: Abburi Ravi. Editing: Goutham Raju. Music: Ramana Gogula. Story: Perarasu. Screenplay & Direction: Bhimaneni Srinivasa Rao. Producer: NV Prasad & Paras Jain. Presenter: RB Choudary. Banner: Megaa Supergood Films Pvt. Ltd. Release Date: 29th December, 2006. There is one formula, and many model problems in math. Similarly, there is one formula and many movies that are coming out with the same one-liner story, as exciting as yesterday's stale food. Pawan Kalyan's release Annavaram was much-awaited, with the debacle of Bangaram before it, making it a total of 5 flops to his (dis)credit. Rumor has it that Pawan Kalyan knew that Annavaram might not be to the liking of his audience, and refused to shoot midway through. It's only a rumor, but it is not that difficult to believe it once we come out of the cinema hall. Annavaram has nothing to offer, neither to Cinegoers or Pawan Kalyan's die-hard admirers. The Same Old Story In one line-A villager's friend is killed in the city, and he turns to 'cleanse' the city of its impurities, namely criminals and gangsters. Annavaram (Pawan Kalyan, who else?) adores his little sister, Varam (Sandhya) and marries her off to a city-lad (Siva Balaji). His stay in the city is not pleasant, and he witnesses atrocities being committed all over. The police are shown, as usual, in a bad light. His friend Narasimham's death (Venu Madhav) shakes him up, and he plans to rid the city of all the gangsters. Treatment The first half is focused on the sibling bond shared between Annavaram and Varam. The second half is full of violence, with Annavaram outwitting the goons and killing them one by one. Songs are average and they start without any rhyme or reason. The movie is very predictable, and there is absolutely no element of freshness. The editing is very jerky and the rest of the departments, including cinematography, choreography, etc., have not been used well. Highlights The second half has 2-3 scenes, but that is the usual fare where the hero outsmarts the villain. Big Minuses There is very little comedy, and the attempts to generate humor fall totally flat. Pawan's potential in this has not been utilized, and character artistes like Ali and Suneel have totally been wasted with one badly written scene each. The romance between Pawan and Asin is so badly handled, that it doesn't even deserve a mention-especially with Asin's dialect which doesn't suit her one bit. Performances Pawan looks disinterested, and puts in very little effort. The script is very weak, so there is no scope whatsoever to display any histrionics of either the lead or the negative characters. Asin has a few scenes, where she breezes in and walks out, without any purpose. The potential of both the lead pair has not been used at all. Sandhya in the role of Pawan's sister looks and acts her part, and suits for that role. There are three main goons, including Ashish Vidyardhi and Lal (of Pandem Kodi fame) and one other, who do their well-rehearsed acts. Dharmavarapu plays the regular corrupt politician. Venu Madhav had a meaty part. Song and Dance 'Lucia' starts so suddenly, you are left wondering if you missed anything. The songs are just about average, and the picturization is so-so. Verdict On the border line of average, this movie has nothing to offer. The story has been done to death, the treatment is not unique and the screenplay is predictable. The actors are wasted in this movie, and the direction is not up to the mark. What does the average Cinegoer look for in a movie? Entertainment, good songs, performances, etc.-no wish is fulfilled by 'Anna-Varam'. |
