Thank God for small mercies. The year 2007 begins on a good note for Telugu cinema. Folks, I liked the film and no where did I get bored. It’s racy, it keeps your attention provided you don’t mind the double entendre which has become Puri’s hallmark. There is nothing extraordinary or ‘re-sounding’ but you will not regret watching it.
Arjun is aware of his ‘average looks’ and he neatly diverts your attention to some superb footwork and fights and with his very convincing acting skills pulls off another entertaining film. As a street smart TV reporter he falls head over heels in love with the beautiful Hansika who has chosen a life of abstinence..why? Don’t ask. Her work at looking beautiful ends there and from there onwards it’s an out and out Arjun cinema all the way. BTW, there is absolutely no chemistry between Arjun and Hansika, why blame Arjun poor fella, he tried his level best to evoke some kinda passion in her but it’s only zilch. She was fine as long as she was a sanyasini but the moment she drops the ascetic ’s garb and gets into the dream sequence, you can’t take it. Sometimes silence helps.
Technically the movie belongs to a superior quality and there is no denying the fact that this is one of the factors that keeps audiences’ interest alive for most part of the movie despite that excessive violence. One glaring error. When the lights go off one expects Arjun to sweep off Hansika but she is very much there in the next scene. Dialogues are easy-going, real and one just shudders to think what would have happened if they would have been penned by someone not as competent. Arjun in all his films has been portrayed as the vivacious, vibrant young man. He’s been lucky for getting directors who have done justice to his roles but it’s high time he tries something different. The film’s idiosyncrasies prove oddly endearing and it’s all on account of the energy infusing Arjun. The role is essayed with great care by him, maintaining a consistency throughout.
Indian cinema has had a surfeit of movies with similar themes and Desamuduru slightly reminds you of Pooja Bhatt’s Paap. Kovai Sarala and Ali’s comedy that runs on the other track suffices. TV channels and Telugu films thrive on each other and you’ll know what I mean when you see the film. We didn’t know, being a reporter is far more glamorous than being a film star. Thank You Puri, Arjun, for the time-pass movie.
