Unlike the mass movies of today, this is a simple film, which talks about the relationships and the egos attached or detached to these relationships. A plain vanilla film with no faction backdrops or a cruel enemy waiting to massacre our hero… Maharadhi, the latest film of Balakrishna gives surprise to the audience and more to his fans. Though there are lots of scenes and sequences wherein the frontbenchers and Balakrishna fans would relish, but lack of strong story line and the gory fights might leave few disappointed. But at the end you come out smiling and with no headaches, isn’t that the best part of the film!
Kudos to the director P Vasu for having done such a nice film at a time, espcially when the Telugu screen is burning with petrol and gory action scenes. The film at many times reminds us of Chandramukhi (the Rajani film which was directed by P Vasu), maybe this film too will catch up with audience like Chandramukhi did! There are lots of elements that will make this film a hit, good performance from Balakrishna, neat family entertainer, well-mingled comedy, and well worked out sentiments. Balakrishna’s mannerisms in the film are very different and he looks fresh, though his wigs are still not at place. Jayapradha, who is doing a Telugu film after a long gap, plays the role of an arrogant mother-in-law character, albeit lacks the arrogance.
The story
The film starts in Nainital wherein Naresh Chowdhary (Naresh) runs a successful music college. And Bala (Balakrishna) works as the music teacher. Competition to this music college is the dance college run by Jayapradha. They both hate each other. To become more successful than that music college, Jayapradha hires a famous dancer Krishna (Balakrishna, don’t worry no double roles in the film) and starts running the show.
In fact Bala and Krishna are one person, and he keeps doing this job for achieving his mission, the mission is to teach a lesson to the arrogant Jayapradha. Meanwhile, Kalyani (Meera Jasmine), daughter of Naresh enters the film and immediately falls in love with the stylish Krishna. Kalyani doesn’t know that her college music teacher Bala and her lover Krishna are the same. The innocent looking Bala encourages her love. Finally, a stage comes when Kalyani says she can’t live without Krishna and it is here that we are told that Jayapradha and Naresh were in fact husband and wife, and due to Jayapradha’s arrogance he had divorced her. They both now come to request Krishna to marry Kalyani, and we are in for one for twist that Bala and Krishna are one (this the director keeps hinting at us always) and that they should henceforth call him Balakrishna, by saying this he starts revealing his flashback.
Balakrishna is a mass guy, drunkard but helping in nature to all the downtrodden, lives in Andhra colony in Visakhapatnam. His mother is Saralamma (Kovai Sarala). Next to this colony there is a ladies hostel and to that place comes Bairavi (Sneha), the first daughter of Naresh-Jayapradha couple. She wants to find an excellent singer and performer so that she can start a music and dance college with him. After hearing about Balayya (as he fondly called by the colony people) from her friends she comes to this place.
Though he is drunkard and a rowdy, she falls in love with him. Due to his love with Bairavi, Balayya gives up drinking liquor. Meanwhile Kalyani’s mother comes to know of her daughter’s love affair and flies from London (in an Air New Zealand flight) to India. She calls Saralamma and insults her. Saralamma dies of an accident immediately. Knowing that Saralamma died because of her mother, Bairavi commits suicide and dies. After all these incidents, Balayya becomes a wayward… From here how he changes into a music master and enters into Nainital; will he marry Kalyani; will the arrogant Jayapradha accept him; will the old couple Naresh and Jayapradha come together, etc is all to be seen on the silver screen.
The Analysis
Overall, a neat entertainer that could be enjoyed by the entire family. Balakrishna has done good job in the film and looks good in various roles that he adores in the film. There are no gory killings, the hero is good man and not a mass killer, the heroines are true to life characters and are not mere strip-teasers, the family is good with their own sentiments exhibited properly and clearly, the comedy is within the main characters and not created for comedy sake, etc are what makes the film interesting and worth watching.
Though a simple story, Vasu has taken clever steps to portray the hero based on his image, while not going with the wind of the Telugu films today. Music of Guru Kiran is good and has a lot of role to play in the film. The song render by Yesudas is a highlight, and the other songs are also good enough. It seems Guru Kiran will have offers flowing to him! Suresh Urs editing is apt and has contributed to the better of the film, he too seems to have adapted to the times, and his editing is in tune with the present generation films! Shekar Joseph camera work is so-so.
Balakrishna steels the show. He portraying different varieties of the same character is very interesting and well performed. He has not over done and in fact his acting is quiet right for the film. His mass movements, and walking style reminds of Rajani in Chandramukhi, but Balakrishna manages shed out that image and create his own style for the film.
Jayapradha’s role was not suitable for her. The arrogance is lacking, since Jayapradha is not known for arrogant look, but for sweet and beautiful looks. The film should have got somebody like Ramya Krishna a la Narasimha film. Sneha and Meera Jasmine have good roles in the film and they have done their parts well. It is only Navaneet Kaur who looks stupid in the film and any junior artiste could have done it. It seems present day Telugu film is not complete with Pradeep Rawat getting kicked by our heroes. In this film too he comes only to get thrashed by Balayya. |
