Anil Ambani to buy 350 Theaters? Hyderabad, Feb. 3: Anil Ambani’s Reliance Communications Group is all set to make a grand entry into film business by taking over 350 cinema theatres of the State. Adlabs Films, a subsidiary of the group, has already entered into agreements with 150 theatres for both outright take over and lease. It was to mark its presence in the film industry that Reliance bought Adlabs Films, one of the biggest entertainment companies in the country with stakes in film processing, production, exhibition and digital cinema. Reliance will be opting for digital screening through satellite in the theatres it is planning to take over. This will give them an edge over regular cinema theatres. “The main aim of the group is to have a formidable presence in the film distribution in the first phase and a monopoly over the industry in the long run,” said an industry watcher. But senior Adlabs officials are keeping their cards close to the chest and are not ready to divulge their plans in the State. “We are in talks with several theatres but nothing has been finalised as yet,” said Ms Anjali Malhotra, Manager (Brand Communications) of Adlabs. Mr Muralidharan, who heads Adlabs southern region operations, said that an announcement would be made at the appropriate time. It is learnt that about 50 cinema theatres in Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam and East Godavari districts have been bought up. They are being renovated now. Adlabs will start running Ranjani and Sivaranjani theatres of Vizianagaram from February 6. “They (Reliance) wanted to modernise the theatres,” said a former management partner of one of the theatres. The powerful GMR group runs six theatres in north coastal districts and all of them have been transferred to Reliance. Theatre managements have been given strict instructions by Reliance not to divulge the details of the deal. Meanwhile, the State government is closely watching the developments. “We know that Reliance subsidiary Adlabs is negotiating with theatre managements,” said Mr Parthasarathi, managing director of AP State Film Development Corporation. “We are expecting some official information from the company soon,” he added. |
