Profile Full Name: Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar Date of Birth: April 24, 1973 Place of Birth: Mumbai Major Teams: India, Mumbai Batting Style: Right -Hand Batsman Bowling Style: Right Arm Medium, Leg Break, Right Arm Off Break ODI Debut : India v Pakistan at Gujranwala, 2nd ODI, 1989/90 Test Debut : India v Pakistan at Karachi, 1st Test, 1989/90 Height : 5'5 The first batsman to score 10,000 runs in one-day cricket, making the record in the third game of a five-match series against Australia on the 31st of March 2001. He reached the landmark when he scored 34 runs in his 266th match and 259th innings. Tendulkar, 27, in his amazing 12-year career, has scored a world record 28 hundreds and 50 half-centuries in his 10,000 runs. A genius without a doubt, this little master made his International debut in ODI’s and Tests at the age of 16 against Pakistan against the fiery pace of Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis. He then went to England as a part of the national side, and has not looked back ever since. The name itself strikes terror in the hearts of bowlers all around the world. Hailed as the next master-blaster following the legacy of the great West Indian Vivian Richards, this man has every shot in the book, and can kill any attack in the world when in full swing. There is nothing this man cannot do. In batting, he has reached a stage that others can only dream of. He has destroyed practically every bowling attack in the world. Tendulkar's 'specialties' include the straight drive (seemingly nobody plays the shot better than him), the cover drive, the square cut, the pullshot over midwicket/square leg, the delicate leg glance, the late cut, the lofted shots over mid-on and mid-off and not to mention the improvisations he keeps coming up with, time and again. He has tremendous power in his forearms and can hit the ball out of almost every ground in the World. He plays each of his shots amazingly and has even employed the reverse sweep to good effect. Some of his shots are hit with so much power that the ball simply rockets to the fence as if he was trying to dismiss the ball from his presence. On the other hand, some of his shots are neatly timed and placed well. His timing can be quite exquisite and it is this blend of timing and raw power which makes him the world's best/greatest batsman. Mentally very strong, Tendulkar is best when confronted by a challenge. Some remarkable achievements of his career are: * 4th highest tally of runs in test cricket (10,134) at an outstanding average of 57.25 (highest among those who have scored over 8,500 test runs) as of March 2005 * Most runs (over 13642) and centuries (38) in one-day internationals * Only person to have scored over 11,000 ODI runs and over 25 ODI centuries as of April 28, 2005 * Highest ODI batting average among Indian batsmen and among all batsmen who have scored over 7,500 ODI runs (as of April 3, 2005) * Most Number of Man of the Matches in one-day internationals * Only player to have over 100 innings of 50+ runs in ODIs as of April 2005 * Most Number of Runs in World Cup Cricket History * First cricketer to cross 10,000-run mark in ODIs * Has equalled Sunil Gavaskar's record of 34 test centuries. * Among those who have played over 100 test matches, he is the only one with a batting average above 55. * Only second Indian to cross 10,000 runs in Test matches. * He has the most centuries in ODI cricket against Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe. * He is the fastest to score 10,000 runs in test cricket history. He holds this record along with Brian Lara. Both of them achieved this feat in 195 innings. * To go with this he has 34 hundreds in Test cricket at an average of 57. An average above 50 distinguishes a batsman as an all time great. * Highest individual score in ODIs among Indian batsmen (186* against New Zealand at Hyderabad in 1999) While his batting ranks him among the best in the world, he is also a part-time bowler and has played a crucial role as a leg spinner or a medium pace bowler who tends to break partnerships. He has more than a hundred wickets in ODIs and 35 in tests, though his bowling averages are above 40. He continues to perform well under the massive weight of expectation of hundreds of millions of cricket followers, in India and around the world, and most recently was named Player Of The Tournament in the 2003 Cricket World Cup. Incidentally, Sachin is the first batsman to be declared run out by third umpire in 1992 in South Africa. NANADAMURI TARAKA RAMUDIKI HANUMANTHUDHINI NENU |

Sachin's gloves fetch Rs 1.11 lakh for ailing soccer referee Kolkata, A pair of gloves worn by Sachin Tendulkar during the Multan Test in Pakistan in 2004 today fetched Rs 1.11 lakh in an auction with the proceeds going for the treatment of an ailing soccer referee. Tendulkar, who could not make it to the function organised by the Calcutta Sports Journalists’ Club, showed a noble gesture by sending in his gloves, which he had donned during an innings of 194 not out in Multan, for the auction. Bollywood superstar Mithun Chakrabarty came forward to conduct the auction by giving a starting bid of Rs 50,000. The bid price soon went into the six figures and finally was won by a city-based industrailist. The cheque was handed over to the wife of the ailing FIFA referee Pradip Nag. Shane Warne picks Tendulkar, Lara as best batsmen Oct 1, 2005 Having reached the twilight of his career, spin wizard Shane Warne yearns for a Test hundred even as he picks Sachin Tendulkar and Brian Lara as the two best batsmen of his era and hardest to bowl at. "I’m proud of what I’ve achieved in cricket. I don’t usually set too many personal goals, but a Test hundred is still something I’d like. I’ve messed up my six best chances," Warne told ‘Observer’ sports monthly in an interview. "There are a lot of statistics linked to me, most of which I don’t worry about - being hit for the most sixes in international cricket, for example - while having the most Test wickets is obviously great. "The one statistic that does annoy me is having the most Test runs in the history of the game without a hundred. I don’t like that." The 37-year-old world’s highest Test wicket-taker interestingly holds the record of accumulating most Test runs (2958) without having scored a hundred. His highest has been 99 he scored in Perth in 2001-02 against New Zealand. He had scored 11 fifties and has a batting average of 16.61. Warne also said India’s master blaster Sachin Tendulkar and current West Indies captain Brian Lara were the hardest batsmen to bowl at. "The hardest batsmen would be Brian Lara and Sachin Tendulkar, the two best of my era," said the Hampshire captain. He, however, said South African Daryll Cullinan was his favourite prey batsman and thought he could get him out every ball. NANADAMURI TARAKA RAMUDIKI HANUMANTHUDHINI NENU |

Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar (born April 24, 1973) is an Indian cricketer, widely considered to be one of the greatest batsmen of all time. He currently holds the records for the most cumulative runs in One-Day Internationals, and the most number of centuries scored in both One-day Internationals and Test cricket. He made his international debut against Pakistan in 1989 at the age of sixteen, becoming India's youngest Test player. Although primarily a top-order batsman, Tendulkar has often proved to be a useful and effective slow bowler. He received India's highest sporting honour, the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna in the year 1997-1998 and the civilian award Padma Shri in 1999. His cricketing and batting abilities are widely regarded as genius by many stalwarts of the game. For instance, Sir Donald Bradman, the Australian great said of Sachin, "He reminds me of myself". He is affectionately known as The Little Master by his adoring fans. NANADAMURI TARAKA RAMUDIKI HANUMANTHUDHINI NENU |

Sachin Tendulkar The greatest living exponent of his craft By Simon Robinson Cricket's greatest ever player, Sir Donald Bradman, was watching a 1996 World Cup match on television when he first saw Sachin Tendulkar bat. The Indian player's technique seemed strangely familiar. Though his stance and his movements were compact and efficient, he hit the ball hard and his shots were ruthlessly effective. The Australian called his wife into the living room of their suburban Adelaide home. "Who does this remind you of?" asked Bradman, then 87. The answer was obvious. "I never saw myself play," Bradman said later. "But I feel that this player is playing much the same [way] I used to play." Being labeled the next Bradman has never been an easy honor. But perhaps no batsman has worn the tag with so much grace—and so deserved it—as Tendulkar. West Indian captain Brian Lara, the only contemporary of Tendulkar's to consistently threaten his position as the batsman of the age, told the Times of India last month that the Indian was the greatest he had ever seen. "You know genius when you see it," said Lara. "And let me tell you, Sachin is pure genius." When he's in form, which is often, Tendulkar can rout the world's best bowlers with ease. Just ask Australian leg-spinning great Shane Warne, who once joked that he had nightmares about bowling to Tendulkar. India's "Little Master" has scored a record 75 centuries in test and one-day internationals and helped revolutionize the speed at which runs are made. But statistics only hint at Tendulkar's greatness. It's the way he scores all those runs that is the most thrilling thing about his game. Tendulkar waits for the bowler's delivery like a martial arts black belt ready to parry an opponent—moving quickly into position, flashing his bat to guide the ball where he will. It's a rare combination of textbook classicism and the inventive violence of modern one-day cricket. Tendulkar isn't perfect, of course. Critics have long argued that he seems to play for the record books first and his team second—rarely rescuing his comrades when they're in trouble in the way other batting greats such as Lara or Australia's Steve Waugh have done. In the past couple of years, Tendulkar also seems to have lost some of the aggression and daring that made Bradman sit up in front of the TV. In January, he was booed off his home ground after scoring just one run off 21 balls. Perhaps the years and the injuries are catching up. But his success to date means that Tendulkar could leave the field tomorrow without any diminution of circumstances. The middle-class boy from Bombay gets paid millions of dollars to appear in television commercials and on billboards selling everything from luxury cars to credit cards, soft drinks to shoes. Reserved and modest, he also appears to carry his fame—and the expectations of a billion people—quite well. A few years ago, Australian player Matthew Hayden wrote that Tendulkar was like a god in India. Tendulkar responded with typical humility. "I do not think anyone can become God," he said. "I am a normal person who plays cricket." And yet sometimes, when Tendulkar has the measure of every ball and is smacking them cleanly through panicking fielders, it's hard not to see the divine spark at work NANADAMURI TARAKA RAMUDIKI HANUMANTHUDHINI NENU |

Turning point in his career It was his change of school to Shardashram Vidya Mandir in Dadar - close to Shivaji Park on his coach's advice which marked a turn around in Sachin's career. He says," I use to bat in four nets at one strech. Whenever, I use to get tired, Achrekar use to keep a one rupee coin on top of the stumps and say, "Anyone who gets him out will take this coin. If no-one gets him, Sachin takes it." Tendulkar till date contributes this technique in being instrumental for enhancing his concentration. He still treasures the 13 coins earned by him during the practice sessions. NANADAMURI TARAKA RAMUDIKI HANUMANTHUDHINI NENU |

By popular vote, the greatest batsman in the world today, Sachin Tendulkar has the cricketing world at his feet. The adulation he commands world over is unsurpassed, perhaps since the days of Don Bradman, to whom of course he has been compared, by no less than the great man himself. While he may not end with a Test career average of 99.94, there is little doubt that based on his vigorous style of batsmanship and his insatiable appetite for runs and big scores, he is the most complete batsman since Vivian Richards. In many ways though he has surpassed even that outstanding West Indian batsman. When Tendulkar is on song, there is no more majestic sight in the cricketing world. The spectators at the stadium are on their feet cheering while all over the world, TV audiences are glued to the screen. He has scored heavily on all kinds of wickets the world over, in conditions which lesser mortals have not been able to master and against bowlers whom other batsmen have found it difficult to score off. Immensely gifted and blessed with an impeccable technique, Tendulkar's batting is a dream, combining timing, elegance and power. Mentally very strong, Tendulkar is best when confronted by a challenge - as he showed when mowing down Shane Warne in India in 1998. Captain during two short stints, Tendulkar has made it clear that he would prefer to concentrate on his batting and indeed, he seems to be getting better with every passing year. Scoring two double centuries in successive seasons and being the first to cross the 10,000 run barrier in ODIs is clear proof of this. The best thing from the fans' point of view - if not the bowler's - is that the entertainment, courtesy Tendulkar, is still at the intermission stage. Long may `The King' continue to regale his willing subjects! NANADAMURI TARAKA RAMUDIKI HANUMANTHUDHINI NENU |

Sachin Tendulkar Vs Abdul Qadir The year was 1989, the little master had recently made his debut in Pakistan. Sachin not even old enough to get a driving licence. Sachin Tendulkar was facing the best bowlers in the business. As the Pakistani crowds jeered and mocked Sachin holding out the placards saying "Dudh Pita Bhachcha ..ghar jaake dhoodh pee", (hey kid, go home and drink milk), Sachin sent the then young leg spinner Mustaq Ahmed hiding for cover (he had hit two sixes in one over. The frustaded mentor of Mustaq Ahmed the legendary Abdul Qadir challenges Sachin saying "Bachchon ko kyon mar rahe ho? Hamein bhi maar dikhao" ("Why are you hitting kids? Try and hit me."). Sachin was silent, since then we all have come to know that he lets his bat do the talking. Abdul Quadir had made a simple request and Sachin obliged, and how. Sachin hit 4 sixes in the over, making the spinner look the kid in the contest. The over read 6, 0, 4, 6 6 6, …and a legend was born. idhi maathram kekaa.veyyi daruvu.

Recognised by Sir Donald Bradman as his modern incarnation, Tendulkar has a skill - a genius - which only a handful have possessed. It was not a skill that he was simply born with, but one which was developed by his intelligence and an infinite capacity for taking pains. If there is a secret, it is that Tendulkar has the keenest of cricket minds. At times in a Test series he looks mortal. But he learns every lesson, picks up every cue, dominates the opposing attack sooner or later, and nearly always makes a hundred. His bravery was proved after he was hit on the head on his Test debut in Pakistan, when he was only 16; and his commitment to the Indian cause has never been in doubt. If captaincy - or rather the off-field management of men less skilled than himself - was beyond him at his first attempt, his reading of the game, and his manifold varieties of bowling, have shown the same acute intelligence. His cricket has been played in the right way too, always attacking, and because he knew that was the right way rather than because he was a child of the one-day age, as he himself modestly said. The awe of opponents was as great as that of crowds. But the finest compliment must be that bookmakers would not fix the odds - or a game - until Tendulkar was out. Surpassed Sunil Gavaskar, his guru, as the leading century-maker in Test cricket with his 35th three-figure score in November 2005.
