Senior sources in Jamaican police have confirmed to TIMES NOW that Pakistan team coach Bob Woolmer did not die a natural death but was murdered. The news, which first leaked out to the press in Pakistan, has not been explicitly confirmed by Jamaican police, who have taken a guarded line merely stating that there is a “bit of suspicion†in the circumstances of Woolmer’s death. However, Jamaican police have informed the ICC, the PCB as well as Woolmer’s family that a “full scale investigation†will be conducted into his death now. The Pakistan Cricket Board spokesperson P J Mir, apparently in damage control mode, scheduled a hurried press conference this morning in Kingston to address and clarify the issue (March 21). “Strong indications of murder†The police and PCB team in Jamaica confirmed to TIMES NOW today outside the theatre where the autopsy took place, there were “strong indications†that it was murder, prompting authorities to announce that the results had been inconclusive. Reports of the toxicology and histology tests are still awaited. Sources have told TIMES NOW that the PCB is upset over the news of the Woolmer homicide being splashed all over the media, saying it was against Jamaican law to give out information before Jamaican authorities did. The fact that one of the world’s most renowned cricket coaches was possibly murdered 36 hours after his team exited from the World Cup, would not only be a source of deep embarrassment for the PCB, but also have very serious implications on international cricket. Additionally, the homicide conclusion opens the door to a host of possibilities as to the motive behind the murder - not the least of which is the alleged player-bookie nexus in Pakistan, which would have been dealt a heavy blow from the team’s exit from the World Cup. Pak team to stay on Pakistan cricket team members have also been questioned by police over the past two days as to their whereabouts the time Woolmer was last seen alive. Police have in fact asked the team to stay back in Kingston for two days after their match with Zimbabwe or till investigations are concluded. “Suspicious†circumstances Bob Woolmer was found on Sunday night (March 18, India time) in his hotel room unconscious and in a pool of vomit. He was pronounced dead on reaching the hospital. TIMES NOW sports editor Faisal Shariff spoke to the Pakistan team’s assistant manager Asad Mustafa, who commented that the circumstances in which Woolmer was discovered were “suspicious†from the start – not only was there vomit found, there were also indications that the coach had suffered from diarrhea, his blood sugar testing machine was found on the floor in the bathroom and there was blood on his cheek and eyes. Woolmer was reported to have abnormal breathing problems because of which he was on prescription drugs. He was also reported to be consuming alcohol for a few days after Pakistan's defeat to Ireland. Pakistan cricket coach Bob Woolmer's death at the World Cup on Sunday is now being treated as "suspicious" by Jamaican police, the deputy commissioner Mark Shields told a news conference on Tuesday. "Having met the pathologist, medical personnel and other investigators, there is now sufficient information to continue a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Mr Woolmer which we are now treating as suspicious," Shields said, reading a short statement. "We have already informed the Woolmer family of this development and we are also in close contact with the Pakistan team management, Cricket World Cup and the ICC (International Cricket Council) to ensure that all the parties are kept informed of the ongoing investigation." One of the top coaches in the world, Woolmer, 58, was found unconscious in his Kingston hotel room on Sunday less than 24 hours after their World Cup defeat by Ireland and pronounced dead in hospital later that day. Reports from the Pakistan camp at the time said that Woolmer was discovered by hotel staff lying on the floor in his room at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel with his mouth wide open. Blood was discovered on the bathroom floor, there was vomit on the walls and signs of diarrhoea. Pakistan were considered one of the leading contenders to win a title they claimed in 1992 but the shock defeat to debutants Ireland -- one of the biggest upsets in the history of the 32-year tournament. Coupled with an opening-day defeat by hosts West Indies, it led to their exit with one group game still to play. 'NO SUSPECTS' The elimination was greeted with fury by fans back home in the cricket-crazy nation who burned effigies of the players. "Obviously 'suspicious' could be anything at this moment," Pakistan team spokesman Pervez Mir said. "It could be something serious, it could be something not serious. We have a man who is down and we don't know the reason why." Shields told reporters that "we have no suspects". The governing body, the ICC, refused to comment when contacted by Reuters on the police statement but spokesman Sami-ul-Hasan said that they expected the match to go ahead. The hotel said it would not be commenting until it had been fully briefed by the police. Earlier on Tuesday the Pakistan Cricket Board had said the findings from a post mortem into the death of Woolmer were "inconclusive". Mir had said at the earlier new conference that further investigations were being carried out by a toxicologist and a histologist (scientist who examines body tissue). He added the team will play their final World Cup group game against Zimbabwe at Sabina Park on Wednesday. After a hastily-arranged meeting of the Pakistan Cricket Board, International Cricket Council and World Cup officials, Mir told Reuters: "We are playing. The chairman of our Board said we will play. The security is fine." The seven-week World Cup culminates on April 28 with the final in Barbados NANADAMURI TARAKA RAMUDIKI HANUMANTHUDHINI NENU |

March 21, 2007 08:25 IST Last Updated: March 21, 2007 09:13 IST According to sources in the Pakistan cricket team, the Jamaican police strongly suspect that Bob Woolmer, the Pakistan coach who died on Sunday, may have been murdered. Woolmer was found unconscious in his hotel room in Kingston and was rushed to Kingston University hospital where he was declared dead an hour later. "The information we have is that the police feel he might have been murdered," the source said. Woolmer's preliminary post-mortem report on Tuesday had proved inconclusive and toxicology and other forensic tests were carried out by the medical and police teams. Meanwhile Geo television also reported that there was information that Woolmer might have been murdered. Incidentally, on Tuesday, former Pakistan pacer Sarfaraz Nawaz had claimed that Woolmer had been murdered. Nawaz, known for shooting off his mouth, told PTI that he was sure the match-fixing mafia was behind Woolmer's death. Speaking at a press conference in Kingston, police have said that while they are waiting for the final reports, which are expected on Thursday morning (local time), they are not ruling out the possibility that Woolmer's sudden death may have been due to some foul play. They reiterated that the conditions of the coach's death were suspicious and they are not ruling out any possibilities. The police also added that Woolmer's wife has been informed of these developments. Woolmer's death came a day after Pakistan suffered a shock defeat against Ireland and was eliminated from the World Cup. NANADAMURI TARAKA RAMUDIKI HANUMANTHUDHINI NENU |
