Indian board may disband present selection committee By K.R. Nayar, Staff Reporter Port of Spain, Trinidad: Following India's dismal performance in the World Cup, chances are that the Indian team selection committee may be dissolved. According to a source close to the Indian team, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) may now appoint a three-man selection committee not based on zonal representation. In the present system, the selection committee is made up of a representative from each zone. The new selection committee could be made up of only three representatives , who would be picked on their credibility as a player. The BCCI is also planning to appoint such a committee to pre-empt criticism from the Indian team coach Greg Chappell. According to information, Chappell is likely to heavily criticise the selectors and the team selection for the World Cup. The coach is likely to put the entire blame on the selection committee, which he feels has not given him the kind of team he wanted from the start of his tenure. It seems Chappell had time and again told the selection committee that if India had to win the World Cup, then the team should be made up of young promising players. This, to the extent that he was against selecting players above the age of 27 even if they had a good record. During the post-match press conference, Chappell even said: "India has not won a tournament abroad since 1985. There are many reasons for it and I don't like to go into it." A group in the BCCI wants the three-man selection committee to be made up of Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev and Mohinder Amarnath. However, whether the South Indian representatives will agree for it will have to be seen. In that case, Brijesh Patel or S. Venkataraghavan might be considered instead of Amarnath. The Pakistan team selection committee has already resigned following their team's exit from the World Cup; the BCCI too may revamp the entire selection system to regain their credibility.
